Carved directly from a single massive sandstone boulder, this "Lonely Castle" dates back to the 1st century AD, representing the Nabataean civilization at its zenith.

While uncommon, central nervous system (CNS) oxygen toxicity is a risk for divers exposed to elevated oxygen partial pressures (PO₂), particularly when breathing enriched air nitrox (EAN) or other oxygen-enriched gas mixtures. 
Oxygen exposure is a function of PO₂ and time: As PO₂ increases, recommended exposure times decrease.
However, CNS oxygen toxicity can be unpredictable, and divers have experienced convulsions under conditions where they were not expected. Even when diving within established limits, cold, exertion, carbon dioxide retention, and other known and unknown individual and environmental factors may increase risk.
Divers breathing any gas with greater than 21% oxygen should be properly trained to do so. Plan dives carefully, analyze your cylinder’s oxygen content independently of the filling station (and program your dive computer accordingly), and respect exposure limits and maximum operating depth (MOD).

In 301 AD, Armenia became the first nation to adopt Christianity as its state religion. But that historic pivot didn't happen in a palace or a grand cathedral. It began in a dark pit, deep beneath the earth, where one man spent thirteen years waiting.
That man was Gregory the Illuminator. The pit was part of a fortress called Khor Virap, set on the Ararat plain. Today, Khor Virap is the most dramatic monastery in the entire Caucasus. Its stone walls rise from flat farmland, and behind them, always, is the snow-capped peak of Mount Ararat — a biblical silhouette that towers across the Turkish border, visible but unreachable.
Gregory was imprisoned there by King Tiridates III, a ruler who had turned against Christianity with brutal force. The king threw Gregory into a dungeon — a narrow, dark hole — and left him to die. But Gregory survived. For thirteen years, local women secretly brought him food and water. When a plague struck the royal court, and no healer could save the king, Gregory was pulled out. He cured Tiridates, and the king converted on the spot.
That conversion changed the course of history. Armenia became the first kingdom to embrace Christianity as its official faith — a full decade before the Roman Empire under Constantine.
Today, you can still descend into that same pit. Pilgrims climb down a narrow ladder into the underground chapel built over it. The air is cool and damp. The silence is heavy. Standing there, you feel the weight of a story that started in darkness and ended with a nation's light.
And then you come up, step outside, and see Ararat. The mountain is the emotional center of Armenian identity — it appears on the national crest, in poetry, in the name of the country's most famous brandy. Yet the summit sits just across the border in Turkey, a constant reminder of a homeland that was lost.
That tension makes Khor Virap more than a photo op. Every year, thousands visit not just to admire the view, but to feel the pull of a history that refuses to stay in the past. A monastery born from a prison, a nation born from a conversion, and a mountain that belongs to another country but still lives in every Armenian's heart.

Witnessing or being involved in a dive emergency can carry a psychological impact that lingers long after the situation is over, and people can experience the same incident yet walk away with very different emotional responses.
DAN's e-learning course, Surface Support: Navigating Trauma After a Dive Incident, was created to help divers understand how stress and trauma can affect themselves and others after an emergency.
Using a psychological first aid framework, the course offers post-incident support strategies for injured divers, rescuers, bystanders, and dive professionals navigating the challenges that may follow a dive emergency.
