Paolo Roversi (b. 1947) was born in Ravenna, Italy. He developed an interest in photography as a teenager and began experimenting with black-and-white photography in a darkroom he built in his family home. In 1970, he started working as a photojournalist for the Associated Press.

Three years later, following an invitation from Elle art director Peter Knapp, he moved to Paris, where he eventually established himself as a fashion photographer.
After working as an assistant to British photographer Lawrence Sackmann, he began photographing for major fashion magazines, including Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire. His career gained international recognition following a Christian Dior advertising campaign in 1980.
Roversi is renowned for his distinctive, poetic photographic style, characterized by soft lighting, muted colours, blurred details and dreamlike portraits.

He frequently uses long exposures and large-format cameras, particularly the 8×10-inch Polaroid, to create intimate, painterly images that blur the boundaries between photography and fine art.
His work has appeared in numerous international fashion magazines, and he has photographed campaigns for Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino and Comme des Garçons.

Among his notable books are Nudi (1999), Studio (2002) and Libretto (2000).

He has lived and worked in Paris for more than five decades and is regarded as one of the most influential fashion photographers of his generation.
