🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image Norway 🇳🇴 A lake up on the high fjell simply runs out of ground and drops off the edge 💧, straight into a valley you cannot see from the top. The rock up here was scoured bare by old ice, so it is moss, snow patches and stone with very little in between 🥾. Reaching an edge like this takes a long walk in, which is exactly why nobody is standing on it. 📷: @graatjeweber "Pure signal, no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️

🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image The fastest animal on Earth raises its chicks on one of Gaudí's towers. A peregrine falcon dives at more than 200 mph (320 km/h). That is about as fast as a Formula One car. A pair moved into a tower of the Sagrada Família in 2003. Falcons have kept coming back each spring for over 20 years, and more than 50 chicks have hatched there since 2005. Barcelona had lost its falcons. The last breeding pair vanished in 1973, from the church of Santa Maria del Mar. In 1999 the city launched a project with a nature group called Galanthus Natura to bring them back. The Sagrada Família was picked because it was one of the last places the birds had nested. It worked. More than ten pairs now nest around Barcelona. Some chose the cable car tower on Montjuïc hill, others the Torre de Collserola (the big communications tower above the city) or the Tres Xemeneies (Three Chimneys) in Sant Adrià de Besòs. The dad of this year's chicks was born on Montjuïc and is 17 years old. Every spring, usually in March and April, the basilica streams the nest live online. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image Every time you open an app, run a software program, or type on a keyboard, you are using technology built on a framework designed by Alan Turing. image In 1936, at 24 years old, Turing published a paper titled "On Computable Numbers." In it, he introduced a theoretical model called the Universal Machine. At the time, "computers" were human beings doing calculations by hand. Turing envisioned a single machine that could perform any task if given the right instructions, essentially inventing the concept of software and programmable memory. When World War II broke out in 1939, British intelligence recruited Turing to Bletchley Park. The German military used the Enigma machine to encrypt its communications. Enigma operated using rotating wheels and internal wiring that generated over 158 quintillion daily combinations. Manual deciphering was virtually impossible. Turing recognized that human operators could not work fast enough to break the cipher daily. Polish cryptanalyst Marian Rejewski and his colleagues had previously cracked early military Enigma ciphers in late 1932 using permutation theory, and Rejewski later designed an electro-mechanical engine called the Bomba in 1938. When the German military added extra complexity on the eve of war, Turing expanded on the Polish groundwork to design a far more versatile British engine called the Bombe. To make the machine operational at scale, cryptanalyst Gordon Welchman made a vital contribution. Welchman designed an addition called the "diagonal board," an electrical circuit that interconnected the Bombe's components and allowed it to exploit logical links between letters instantly. By running electrical current through simulated rotor positions, the Bombe used short stretches of guessed plain text (called "cribs") to eliminate millions of false combinations in minutes. Official Bletchley Park historian Sir Harry Hinsley estimated that the intelligence generated at Bletchley Park shortened World War II by two to four years and saved millions of lives. After the war, Turing returned to academia and pioneered early work in artificial intelligence, creating the "Turing Test" in 1950 to evaluate machine intelligence. Yet, despite his contributions, the state turned against him. In January 1952, Turing reported a burglary at his home. During the investigation, police discovered he was in a relationship with another man. Under Section 11 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act 1885, same-sex relationships were illegal in the United Kingdom. Turing was arrested and charged with gross indecency. Because the entire Bletchley Park operation was classified under the Official Secrets Act, Turing was legally barred from telling the court or the public about his wartime service. He could not explain that he had helped save the nation. To avoid prison and continue his mathematical research, Turing chose chemical probation through synthetic hormone injections. The conviction resulted in the revocation of his security clearance, barring him from government research and placing him under police surveillance. On June 7, 1954, Alan Turing died of cyanide poisoning in his home. He was 41 years old. The work that saved millions remained secret for another two decades. It was not until 1974 that the British government finally declassified the Ultra project, revealing Turing's central role in World War II to the public for the first time. In 2009, the British Prime Minister issued an official apology for the treatment Turing received. In 2013, Queen Elizabeth II granted him a posthumous Royal Pardon. In 2017, the UK Parliament passed "Alan Turing's Law," retroactively pardoning thousands of men convicted under historical statutes. In 2021, the Bank of England placed Turing's portrait on the £50 banknote. Alan Turing built the theoretical framework for the digital world, shortened the deadliest conflict in human history, and paid for it with his career and dignity. 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- image Wasps and bees may look similar at first, but they are quite different insects. One of the easiest ways to tell them apart is by their body shape. Wasps generally have slender, smooth-looking bodies with a narrow waist, while bees usually have rounder, fuzzier bodies covered with tiny hairs. These physical differences are useful clues when trying to identify them outdoors. Their diets are also different. Many wasps are carnivorous and feed on other insects, spiders, or animal-based foods. Some wasps also eat sugary substances such as nectar and fruit. Bees mainly depend on plant-based food, especially nectar and pollen. Nectar provides bees with energy, while pollen supplies important nutrients that help support the colony. Another major difference is their stingers. Wasps generally have smooth stingers, which means they can sting more than once. Bees, particularly honeybees, have barbed stingers that can become lodged in the skin after a sting. Because of this, a honeybee usually cannot sting repeatedly in the same way a wasp can. However, not every bee species has exactly the same type of stinger. Wasps and bees also play different roles in nature, although both are important. Wasps are well known as predators and help control populations of insects and other small creatures. Some wasps also contribute to pollination. Bees are especially important pollinators because they move between flowers while collecting nectar and pollen. This helps many plants reproduce and supports ecosystems and agriculture. Their behaviour can vary depending on the species and situation. Wasps are often considered more defensive and may become aggressive when their nests are disturbed. Bees are generally focused on collecting food and protecting their colonies rather than seeking conflict. However, bees can also sting when they feel threatened. So, while “aggressive wasp” and “docile bee” are common descriptions, neither applies perfectly to every species. Both insects have important jobs in nature, and understanding their differences can help us identify and appreciate them.
