Sometimes it feels so funny to me that I really birthed this little Finn.
4 years old and salmiakki is a casual sweet treat for him. When we travel, we have to pack large quantities of rye bread.
British children could never π
I did it, sewed my first item of clothing π
This summer, in the spirit of "you can just do things", I decided to get a sewing machine and learn to make my own clothes. πͺ‘π§΅
It seemed like my body shape was once again out of fashion (was it ever in fashion?), and I couldn't find anything I actually wanted to wear in the shops.
I chose a "beginner-friendly" pair of pyjamas to start with, but of course I had to complicate things by lengthening the shorts into full-length trousers.
When I was able to start trying them on, I also realised I wasn't happy with the fit. The rise was too short in the front and the legs were too wide, so instead of sticking with the pattern, I also changed the foldover waistband into an attached waistband for extra length, and altered the legs to fit by pinning them on myself.
So what have I learned?
π’ Pacing. Better to work in short focused bursts than exceed my limits and make mistakes
πOvercoming perfectionism. I always want to be outstanding at everything right away, and it's hard for me when there's a gap between my practical skills and the picture I have in my head
π§©Problem-solving. The pattern didn't fit, so I made it fit. And the instructions were minimal so I had to do a lot of figuring things out on my own. By the end, I really started to get a feel for how the pieces fit together.
The result? A perfectly fitting pair of pyjama bottoms π
Now I just need to get over all the little imperfections that only I know are there π
