By abusing a dusty WerFaultSecure(.)exe from Windows 8.1, attackers sidestep PPL protections, dump LSASS raw, rebrand it as a PNG, and feed it to Mimikatz. NTLM hashes and creds fall out like candy.
👉 This isn’t just a bug — it’s a design failure. Backwards compatibility weaponized.
👉 Defenders need to hunt WerFaultSecure exe outside System32, watch CreateProcessAsPPL, and flag fake PNG minidumps.
