Feel free to send this letter to the editor of your local newspaper. A much spicier "you should stop paying taxes!" would be more fun, but if you want it to get printed and anyone to actually consider it, this is probably a gentler approach: Dear Neighbor, No, I will not take part in the "ICE OUT" boycott day. It isn't because I disagree with the spirit of the event or support ICE - quite the opposite! The thrust of my professional and intellectual life is characterized by opposing all forms of tyranny and violent coercion by working to build and support bottom-up, voluntary collectives that nurture self-determination and individual rights.   It is to that end that I refuse to close up shop or boycott local businesses this January 30th.   Here's a recipe for working against your own interests, gleaned from the tactics of the proposed strike:   Deprive our local businesses of the patronage they rely on to survive and continue providing value to our communities. "Shut down" the town economy, which is a close proxy for our critical local infrastructure.   Lock the doors and turn off the lights on the welcoming spaces that offer face-to-face connection and build social resilience.   Shun and shame those members of the community who quite literally build the structure we all rely on to ensure our local bonds are stronger than the external forces that threaten our voluntary social organizations (whether those forces are overseas, across state lines, in the White House or next door). No, thank you. See you at the shop on January 30th. [your name or nym] View quoted note →

did anyone on nostr know there is a nationwide work/school/shopping "boycott" re: ICE? i guess the idea is: harming small, local businesses in your neighborhood who depend on every sales dollar and are probably community hubs of connection and value storage and distribution is an effective guard against federal tendancies toward tyranny? i found out by word of mouth from someone who sacrifices part of their time and spirit to centralized megacorp social media in order to learn how to build grassroots resiliency.

pretty crazy that no matter what happens over the next few years, as long as electricity and isps stay on and open, you'll be able to discuss it on nostr. (better with backyard nukes and mesh networks.. but baby steps)
