John Vincent Atanasoff (Йон Атанасов in Bulgarian) — American physicist and inventor credited with inventing the first electronic digital computer, built in the 1930s at Iowa State College with graduate student Clifford Berry. The machine became known as the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC), and its key innovations — binary representation, electronic switching via vacuum tubes, and regenerative capacitor memory — became foundational to all modern computing. He was born October 4, 1903 in Hamilton, New York, to a Bulgarian father from Boyadzhik, a small village in southern Bulgaria near Yambol, and an American mother who taught mathematics. His paternal grandparents were killed in the April Uprising of 1876 against Ottoman rule; his father emigrated to the US in 1889. For decades John Mauchly and Presper Eckert were credited as the inventors of the computer via ENIAC, but a 1973 federal court ruling established Atanasoff as the original inventor of the digital computer after it was shown Mauchly had visited Atanasoff in Iowa in 1941 and reviewed his designs. He visited Bulgaria in 1970 and 1985 and was deeply honored there — Bulgaria gave him the Order of Saints Cyril and Methodius (First Class) in 1970, the country's highest science honor, and President George H.W. Bush awarded him the National Medal of Technology in 1990. He died June 15, 1995. In Bulgaria he's often called "the father of the computer" — a point of significant national pride.

Break ups suck 💔

My sister thinks Bulgaria changing it's currency to the euro and leaving behind the lev is/was very good for Bulgaria, and she feels strongly that my feed must be largely influenced apparently by the Russian conspiracy farms. She said how could I be concerned about digital currency and the extinction of cash when I work for a digital currency. :) I am like "huh, what?" - "Bitcoin" she said. She got very riled up and wanted us to end the conversation.

Winning feels good. And I've been in the euphoria of a whole nation, the last couple of dsys. My peoples. Others may not be able to understand. Something very positively optimistic for my 8-year-old niece: that dreams come true and anything is possible, for us too. I feel this win has injected into my progressively defeated veins some of that medicine, like a breath of fresh air of renewed faith.
