Facebook has set two traps for a lot of people around the world.
Firstly, they've somehow convinced people to use FB messenger as they're main communication tool. (I suspect it's largely through network momentum, as such a large percentage of the world has a FB account.) I myself have friends that won't use anything but Messenger. No email. No Signal. Nothing but Messenger.
Secondly, in a number of developing countries, they've partnered with local mobile phone service providers to offer unlimited messaging via Facebook Messenger, *even if* you haven't subscribed or paid for a data plan on your phone.
