Started reading Malcolm X’s autobiography. Idk — just wanted to know how the West got here, why it is doing what it’s doing now. 40 pages in: Malcolm’s in Boston. Father died. Mother’s in hospital. He grew up washing dishes, went to school, now staying with his sister Ella. My only fear while reading this: I don’t “see” race the way it’s described. Guru Nanak’s message of ONENESS lives in me. I don’t think in terms of Black or White. I don’t know if Malcolm is good or bad — that’s not the point. My fear is… will I start seeing race where I didn’t before? The book says: this is how White people think, this is how Black people think — and I pause. My mind is blank right now. I don’t care about race or how anyone thinks as a group. But maybe the book might plant that lens, and make me ask: “Do people really think this way — by race?” That thought scares me. It might dim that spiritual feeling of ONE that I carry. But I’m still reading.
