I saw an RIP Dolly Parton headline that included "her brilliant business brain meant she could have been a billionaire if she hadn't given so much to charity" ...I think that might be better than having just "billionaire" in your obituary.

A lot of people absorbed the idea that “I was wrong” = “I’m a horrible person”. Unfortunately a lot of religion leans into this. In religion “I was wrong” = “I sinned” = “I’m going to be punished by god” ...which is of course terrifying!

You can not have a solid, close relationship with someone who does not know how to hear a critique and who is not capable of saying things like “I understand”, “I can see how that would be upsetting”, “I was wrong”, “I’m sorry”, “I’m willing to change that”, etc. Which of course does not mean that someone will always say those things. But you can’t be close to a person who can’t accept that they are a fallible human who is sometimes in error and acknowledge that and adjust. Having real, solid relationships with others requires a specific skill set, and it’s a skill set that we don’t often teach and so it’s no surprise that it’s a rare skill set. But it is something that any capable, motivated person can learn.

If you have negative/difficult/intrusive thoughts or feelings, don't try to stop or change what you're feeling, just change the meaning that you give it. For example, you’re on a flight and as it’s about to take off the engines get loud and the plane goes faster and faster and so does your heart! The anxiety has kicked in! And you could tell yourself a number of different things about that. You could tell your self that the plane is about to crash and we are all going to die!!! 😱 Or you could tell yourself that statistically speaking you’re in just about the safest place that you could be and you’re being a complete fucking idiot for feeling this way!!! …or, you could tell yourself that these feelings make sense as flying isn’t natural to humans. You’re probably only the second generation in your whole 200k year family line to have ever felt these weird sensations and noises and to intentionally launch yourself into the sky. So ya, of course your nervous system is a bit on edge right now!

One time I accidentally read my daughters diary… but in her diary she was confessing to having read my diary!!! So that left me in a bind. I had found some pages that looked like they were ripped out of a notebook in a trash can. I was curious about what it was so I picked it up to read it. It was an existential analysis of an anime… and then a confession to having read my diary! But she didn’t read much of my diary cuz it was very boring, apparently all I wrote were complaints about Twitter! 🤣 Accurate.

We just insist on seeing a “good guy” and a “bad guy” in every situation. We love the simplicity. But really, 90% of the time, it’s “bad guy” vs “currently worse bad guy” and this is just such a great example. Here I would call Candice the bad guy and this Andrew dude the currently worse bad guy.
