Sitting on a bus between Harare and Bulawayo traveling 7 hours through the countryside of #Zimbabwe and sending instantly settled money from my somehow self-hosted Misty @Breez ⚡️ wallet to my self-hosted Lightning wallet @npub148qm...jra7 and back. On mobile data. It still baffles me how it - compared to the traditional systems - is fast, cheap, secure and permissionless. I‘m living in the future. I hope to see it coming into general use. The bus driver just did a very risky maneuver.

The currency board at Electrosales in Harare shows 1 USD = 32 ZIG today. #Zimbabwe Gold is the current legal tender called which loses value just as fast as all other currencies before. That’s why everyone wants to own USD instead. Almost no one uses ZIG. image

Bongani started as a surfer kid. Now he’s 17 and set up nodes for the @BitcoinEkasi center, where he lives. He teaches the other kids and wants to become a developer and go to university. Listen to him talk about Satoshi and the tech! Not sure if he’s on Nostr. Please send some sats this way: bongani@blink.sv View quoted note →

Working in Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa comes with challenges like daily load shedding. That means there is no electricity as there is not enough production to cover the demand. In South Africa there is an app that announces times without electricity, at least you can plan. Not in Zambia and Zimbabwe, here you never know when it comes or for how long. Even if you have solar since batteries are expensive many houses only have electricity for a couple of hours. If it’s a rainy day even less. So we turn off the fridge and use solar lamps. Whenever power comes we immediately start charging all devices. When electricity goes often the internet dies down too. And you never know when. Quite challenging. image

Add facial recognition to KYC social media and free speech is dead. Madison Square Garden’s surveillance system banned a fan over his T-shirt design And he didn’t even wear it to the venue! The 2017 design was „disrespectful“ to the CEO of the company behind MSG. All these whiny little boys who can’t stand being criticized. 🤦‍♂️

Trying to upload a 3.2 GB video file with Starlink from Zambia. Yesterday it took around 5 hours to upload a video of the same size. Just to give you an impression of how difficult it is to work here. image
