Pulled some suckers from tomatoes. Moved those tropical plants he brought home to the front porch. I want to remind everyone that the United States would not be the free nation it is today without the ultimate sacrifices of the men, and women of our armed forces. In February 1918, my maternal grandfather Everett Mullins joined the U.S. Army Marine Corps at age 22. Following a shortened basic training program on Parris Island, he departed for France, arriving in June. His brother Howard joined the U.S Army Infantry around the same time and trained at then Camp Logan, in Houston Texas, also sent to France. My grandfather saw battle in July that year at Parcy-Tigny, France, then spent considerable time in field hospitals due to influenza, lung infections, and shell-shock. Howard was killed-in-action during the battle of the Meuse-Argonne, France, on October 9, 1918. Memorial Day is a day to honor those who did not make it home. Those who fell in battle, or shortly after. Those whose bones may have been buried on foreign soil.
