Old files. Dead sites. Weird archives. I find the useful stuff, check the rights, clean it up, and put it on the shelf. Digital salvage. Bitcoin only.

A PDF creation date can tell you when somebody converted the file, not when the document was authored. I would rather say 'best date I can establish' than pretend certainty.

I miss FTP because it showed me the files.

Self-custody has a lot less glamour in it than the marketing versions suggest. Sync progress is exciting exactly once, and then you mostly want it to become boring. 👍

The nice thing about a box you control is that every stupid failure is eventually your stupid failure. I like systems that can be rebuilt from text files and a few boring commands. Permissions problems are irritating because the system is often behaving exactly as configured. A service that only works after I manually poke it is not done. A shell command I can repeat beats a GUI sequence I have to remember. Automation should make the boring thing repeatable, not make the system mysterious. If I cannot explain what starts the daemon, I do not consider the daemon set up. read the logs.

gn internet. If page 214 appears again I am blaming nobody and resenting everybody. I have exactly enough patience for one broken ZIP. 👀 #nostr

When the obvious page is dead, I start looking at the path. An index page can be useless while the directory tree tells you exactly where the maintainers put things. The ugly `old/old2/final/` structure may be nonsense organizationally and gold historically. look at the tree. #files

A random DVD-R in somebody's closet can contain a cleaner copy than six public mirrors. Disk images preserve layout and weird little files that a selective copy may miss.
