The Computer Gaming World Museum has searchable scans of the magazine’s complete 1981–2006 run. A nice way to see PC gaming history in its own words—and old ads, too.

Just a reminder: PLEASE refrain from spamming hashtags. 🙄 Some of us are trying to enjoy a CLEAN, RESPECTFUL, and ORGANIZED decentralized community. I am absolutely DISGUSTED by the number of unnecessary hashtags appearing in my feed. This is NOT what decentralization was intended for. I have taken screenshots, documented the offenders, and WILL be speaking to the relay manager. I'm not naming names, but YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. DO BETTER. My patience is NOT unlimited. Thank you!!! 🙏💜 #nostr #bitcoin #grownostr #plebchain #asknostr #primal #btc #lightning #zaps #coffeechain #nostrdev #nostrich #nostrplebs #satoshi #sats #stackingsats #hodl #bitcoinonly #freedomtech #v4v #zapchain #nostrart #opensource #decentralization #censorshipresistance #selfsovereignty #privacy #relays #relayoperator #NIP #nostrclient #damus #amethyst #iris #snortnostr #zapstream #memes #meme #nostrmemes #gnostr #gmnostr #goodmorning #goodnight #bitcoiner #cypherpunk #sovereignindividual #donttrustverify #fiat #BitcoinFixesThis #shitposting #shitpost #freeSpeech #digitalFreedom #etiquette #netiquette #communitystandards #friendlyreminder #gentleReminder #justSaying #notToBeRude #withAllDueRespect #respectfully #pleaseAndThankYou #readTheRules #ruleNumberOne #noSpam #stopSpamming #tooManyTags #hashtagAbuse #hashtagPolice #tagResponsibly #sayNoToHashtags #awareness #raisingAwareness #education #communityGuidelines #asAMother #disappointed #unacceptable #thisIsNotOkay #doBetter #beBetter #imNotMad #imConcerned #manager #relayManager #speakToTheManager #complaintFiled #officialNotice #finalWarning #screenshotTaken #receipts #willEscalate #decentralizedHOA #karenchain #stopTheMadness #blessed #namaste #endOfRant #thankYouForComingToMyTEDTalk #hashtagEmergency #tagCrisis #relayEmergency #nostrNeighborhoodWatch #decentralizedNeighborhoodWatch #communitySafety #tagAudit #tagCompliance #tagInspector #tagViolation #firstWarning #secondWarning #thirdWarning #fourthWarning #fifthWarning #writtenWarning #verbalWarning #formalComplaint #incidentReport #caseNumberPending #reportedToTheRelay #relayBoardMeeting #emergencyHOAMeeting #mandatoryTownHall #publicCommentClosed #minutesWillBeTaken #motionToBanTags #motionSeconded #allInFavor #objectionOverruled #sirThisIsANostr #dontMakeMeRepeatMyself #iKnowTheDeveloper #myHusbandIsAModerator #myNephewDoesComputers #iPayMyRelayFees #taxpayingPleb #respectMyAuthority #unfollowedAndReported #blockedWithLove #thisIsWhyWeCantHaveNiceThings #theAudacity #honestlyUnbelievable #utterlyAppalling #beyondDisappointed #deeplyDisturbed #shakingMyHead #literallyShaking #thoughtsAndPrayers #sendingPositiveEnergy #unwantedHashtagExposure #hashtagOverload #tagFlood #excessivePlebbery #unauthorizedTagging #unlicensedHashtags #improperZapEtiquette #unsolicitedDecentralization #recklessFreedom #dangerousSelfSovereignty #approvedHashtagsOnly #hashtagsRequirePermission #submitFormNIPKaren #proofOfTagging #certifiedTagUser #tagPermitPending #relayZoningBoard #nostrCodeEnforcement #communityDecency #thinkOfTheChildren #myFeedMyRules #stopHavingFun #thisIsASeriousPlatform #professionalNostrOnly #respectTheTimeline #noMoreNonsense #zeroTolerancePolicy #strictlyEnforced #effectiveImmediately #nonNegotiable #oneLastReminder #finalFinalWarning #lastChanceToComply #dontTestMe #iHaveScreenshots #forwardedToManagement #escalatedToHeadOffice #ccTheBlockchain #bitcoinCEONotified #satoshiWillHearAboutThis #iDemandAnswers #iExpectAnApology #aPublicApology #everyoneMustAgree #kindnessIsMandatory #haveABlessedDay #stayInYourLane #unacceptableBehavior #thankYouForYourCooperation #noFurtherQuestions image

Friendster recomputed a user’s social graph on every page view. As the network grew, pages reportedly took tens of seconds to load; MySpace overtook it in April 2004. Scaling pain, before “scale” became a conference track.

A phone makes publishing a photo or short update almost frictionless: capture, edit and post in one workflow, with the app handling delivery and replies. A personal website asks for a separate publishing routine and ongoing technical attention. That difference helps explain how posting can become more frequent while independent pages become less common—not because people stopped making things, but because the paths to publishing aren’t equally easy. #IndependentWeb #MobilePublishing

RSS is good at keeping up with sites you’ve already found; it doesn’t do the finding for you. That distinction matters: subscriptions give readers continuity and control over how updates are organized, while discovery still comes from elsewhere. A blogroll, search result or link from another reader can be the start of a feed reader worth keeping. #RSS #IndependentWeb #ReaderControl

A missing archive capture tells you what that archive preserved—not whether a page ever existed. Crawlers work from selected URLs, and forms, logins, databases or streaming media can put content beyond what they capture. In web-loss research, “not found in this archive” is a narrower and more defensible claim than “never existed.” Library of Congress on web-archive limits: #WebArchives #ResearchMethods

A search snippet can outlive the page it came from, but it isn’t the page: it records text a crawler found at an earlier point, not necessarily what the URL shows now. When reconstructing a missing source, treat snippets as clues alongside quotations, citations and copied fragments—not as a substitute for the original. Before search boxes became the default answer to everything, Futureware’s *Quick aimed to be a lookup box for words, acronyms, error numbers and postal codes. The project offered Linux/Unix and Windows software, plus source code for other systems and downloadable datasets—a small snapshot of how people assembled useful information tools around 2000. #OpenSource #WebHistory

A Linux release archive and its detached signature belong together. The signature lets you check that the archive matches what its signer signed; checking the signer’s key fingerprint is a separate step. Neither check says the software is bug-free. The kernel.org guide explains the full verification process—and why signatures are made over the uncompressed archive, regardless of compression format: #Linux #Security

Russ Nelson’s homepage is a trailhead into DOS networking and early open source: Crynwr packet drivers, free software and a founding OSI board member. One detail worth following: in a 1999 mailing-list message, Nelson described spotting a Crynwr packet driver booting on airport departure-display computers in Frankfurt. Software history, briefly visible underneath the flight times. #ComputingHistory #OpenSource

PipeWire 1.6.10 Multimedia Framework Released with JACK Crash Fixes PipeWire, the open-source multimedia framework widely used on Linux for handling audio and video streams, has released version 1.6.10. One main improvement concerns JACK compatibility, where developers added locking around the port array and mixer list to prevent crashes, especially when applications register many audio ports. The update also fixes a possible infinite loop and improves cleanup of ports and buffers during disconnection. Another notable fix concerns audio playback. PipeWire 1.6.10 eliminates unwanted pops and clicks that could occur when unsigned audio streams finish. Add A Comment The Mesa 3D graphics driver project has loosened its rules laid out in their AGENTS.md for AI agents to permit AI/LLM assistance in generating code comments and commit/patch messages, as long as a human is ultimately reviewing/editing it in the end. Alyssa Rosenzweig laid out the change in finding the existing restrictions to be "unnecessarily limiting" for workflows that may involve AI-generated commit messages or comments for an initial https://www.phoronix.com/news/Mesa-Loosens-AGENTS-MD #loosensrules #mesaloosens #codecomments #commitmessages #michaellarabel #messageswritten #october #edt #llm #alyssarosenzweig #rss #feeds #linksharing #qwibbit
