So weird. A bunch of American TikTokers are fleeing the site ahead of its potential ban to an app called, Xiaohongshu or Little Red Book from China created by a guy named Charlwin Mao. Its terms of service state users must uphold socialist and Chinese values. But also Mao is a Stanford business and Bain Capital alum. So clearly as silicon valley as it gets in addition to being very Chinese too.
Just goes to show that social dynamics are as important to how these apps grow as the tech itself.

@Cory Doctorow has a good take on the problems with Bluesky and why they’re supporting the FreeOurFeeds.com project. I mean if you take Nostr plus the Bluesky bridge eclipse.pub. We should be putting a louder voice out there that Nostr is the open free alternative to Bluesky.
What would it mean if apps stop being a major source of work and instead we just have a world of libraries which easy user combines together using AI in to an app for themselves?
“Today's software ecosystem evolved around a central assumption that code is expensive, so it makes sense to centrally develop and then distribute at low marginal cost.
If code becomes 100x cheaper, the choices no longer make sense! Build-buy tradeoffs often flip.
The idea of an "app"—a hermetically sealed bundle of functionality built by a team trying to anticipate your needs—will no longer be as relevant.
We'll want looser clusters, amenable to change at the edges. Everyone owns their tools, rather than all of us renting cloned ones.” -
Interesting a bunch of activists and tech folks are creating an independent foundation to try and wrest control of bluesky’s ATProtocol away from the VC backed bluesky company.
I originally proposed that bluesky’s intellectual property would be placed in an independent foundation from the start. Will it be too late now that Bluesky’s raising a massive round of VC / Private Equity funding from Bain Capital? It would have been a lot easier to make this system open if it had started out that way.
If you’re in Europe and developing Nostr then you should apply for NLnet grants. They fund a broad diversity of open source open protocols. Their work helped lay the groundwork for Nostr by supporting the precursors and ecosystem. Just don’t make your proposal sound like a cryptocurrency project as they’ll think of bitcoin in the same bucket of shitcoins. So focus other aspects of what we’re doing in the nostr ecosystem. 🫣

“The sad truth is neither Republicans or Democrats actually care about protecting speech or civil liberties online. Both parties just want to censor the other side.” - @Taylor Lorenz
Tencent has released an absolutely amazing video restoration library… I think it’s going to cause every old film to be re-released at higher video quality.
Bikeindex.org is a a great grassroots social solution to bike theft since the state and police have clearly decided that they don’t care about it.

I’m really excited about our list support in Nos. It lets me keep up to date with topical nostr feeds and follow people who post less frequently. We also got better hashtag and fediverse support in this release.
