This deplatforming shit continues. A friend just got her paid flowcode site shutdown because she’s using it to help activists who arrested at black lives matter protests. Flowcode is kind of a linktree plus micro crm. They’re also being refused access to anyone who will process donations because although a legal defense fund for is entirely legal and constitutionally protected. This is important, the right to speech and money shouldn’t be limited to those whose views are acceptable to the state or a few corporations that control retail fintech. This is why I work on Nostr.

I know it’s silly, but my most common use of an LLM is avoiding remembering what’s in man pages. Being able to use human language to describe what i want my CLI tools to do just works so much better for me.

Apparently @jack was invited to give a talk at FOSDEM and lots of people got upset about it. I have no idea if the talk will happen, but I do wonder if these guys protesting understand that the vast majority of open source projects are sponsored and funded by corporations. To not include and understand the motivations of those companies and how they use and support open source feels like willful ignorance. The first freedom of free software is that you can run the code for any purpose, including as a business making money it capitalism.

One interesting thing I've noticed now that we've adopted being able to put any of your lists as a feed in @nos is that it really uncenters the main ContactList.. In some ways it's really amazing, we get a google plus circles like experience. Do i want to see posts by nostr devs, tap that list, if i want my nos team, i can look at that, or the nos recommended users, or people i follow on bluesky or mastodon... I can put all the overly enthusiastic posters on a list... But a lot of Nostr apps are built around the idea that ContactList is your primary way of calculating the social graph. Especially Nos, we particularly use it for things like mutes, content warnings, etc... By making my lists way more open, a web, then Nostr works really differently. What's more, what would happen when it'd be easy to use somebody else's lists the same way?

Nostr is a great technology but when people post stuff that isn’t related to bitcoin or nostr itself they struggle to get traction and build an audience. Other platforms have algorithms or tools to cultivate multiple communities of users and interest. We’re a bit stuck with just one at the moment. Solving this is essential for Nostr’s future. Doesn’t matter if he didn’t intend it to be a Roman salute (fascist salute) because that’s how it understood. And if he didn’t mean it then he’d be rushing to explain the mistake. He’s perfectly happy to have people think he’s Nazi. That’s enough in my book. View quoted note →

Apparently TikTok decided to disable all accounts associated with Americans, not just use in the US. I had to delete the app and reinstall it creating a new user in order to get back in from NZ. It’s weird because I’m pretty sure the account I was using was created in after I moved to NZ three years ago. Anyway. I’m back in and TikTok is now free from the influence of Americans. image

So weird. A bunch of American TikTokers are fleeing the site ahead of its potential ban to an app called, Xiaohongshu or Little Red Book from China created by a guy named Charlwin Mao. Its terms of service state users must uphold socialist and Chinese values. But also Mao is a Stanford business and Bain Capital alum. So clearly as silicon valley as it gets in addition to being very Chinese too. Just goes to show that social dynamics are as important to how these apps grow as the tech itself.

Interesting a bunch of activists and tech folks are creating an independent foundation to try and wrest control of bluesky’s ATProtocol away from the VC backed bluesky company. I originally proposed that bluesky’s intellectual property would be placed in an independent foundation from the start. Will it be too late now that Bluesky’s raising a massive round of VC / Private Equity funding from Bain Capital? It would have been a lot easier to make this system open if it had started out that way.

If you’re in Europe and developing Nostr then you should apply for NLnet grants. They fund a broad diversity of open source open protocols. Their work helped lay the groundwork for Nostr by supporting the precursors and ecosystem. Just don’t make your proposal sound like a cryptocurrency project as they’ll think of bitcoin in the same bucket of shitcoins. So focus other aspects of what we’re doing in the nostr ecosystem. 🫣 View quoted note →

Bikeindex.org is a a great grassroots social solution to bike theft since the state and police have clearly decided that they don’t care about it. View quoted note →
