When maxis talk about hodling Bitcoin, it is implicit that the BTC is self-custodied. But the growth of Bitcoin Treasury Companies means this is no longer how hodling is perceived, especially by the mainstream. BTC is now an asset that you can hand over some dollars to buy, and everything else will be taken care of for you. And you might even be able to outperform BTC via leverage. This is a sly manouvre by the state, legacy finance and Bitcoin influencers to keep wealth and control in their hands. Everytime we talk about BTC, particularly to newbies, we need to assert and reassert that only self-custodied BTC is BTC.

BTC will be used as a currency and not only hodld because Bitcoiners *need* to invest in freedom-focused tech and infrastructure in order to defeat the state. Hodling will starve the state of oxygen increasingly over time. However, it will not happen immediately - and so governments have plenty of our fiat money to use against us in the meantime. And so we need to build and invest in our own social media platforms where we can tell the truth, produce our own non-poisonous food, etc. The builders of these products and services - like nostr devs, based content creators and organic farmers - will ask for the soundest form of money in return. Therefore spending BTC is not just a fun and charitable thing we will do to subsidise the network while giving ourselves a pat on the back - but a market-driven route to resisting slavery and becoming free.
