Many people believe the path to accomplishment is being harder on yourself, but that makes life and your heart harder and insensitive to subtle and important things. In reality, the path to success is listening to, believing, and following the truth with kindness. Believing the truth with kindness keeps your heart gentle and compassionate while maintaining clear connection with what is most real. This path will equip you to be good and dangerous, kind and courageous, character and competent.

You can't train people in a lie, and expect better behavior from them. To get improved behavior, train their identity in the truth. Then improved behavior will flow naturally.

Believing lies about your identity will make your marriage harder. If you believe the truth that you are a child and friend and saint and king/queen/priest of God, it will dramatically improve your self-image and the quality of your marriage, since what you believe about yourself is how you tend to interact with your spouse, because it is true. If you attend a church that teaches you that you are a sinner, continuing to attend that church is a really bad idea. Attending a church that teaches the truth about your identity in Jesus Christ is a far better idea because out of your heart spring the issues of life, and what you believe about your identity is what you will do. If you believe the lie that in Christ you are still a sinner, you will struggle with sin and wonder why, because you don't believe the truth. If you believe you are a saint, a child born of God, and a friend of God and not a sinner, you can go the rest of your life without sinning because it is no longer you who live, but Christ who lives in you, and through you. satan has done a good job using certain churches to train their congregants in lies about their fundamental identity that violate what God says about who you are. If I believed half the lies some Christians believe about identity, I'd be perpetually depressed. Thankfully, God doesn't perpetuate the distortions some Christians believe, and I tend to get my identity from Him, who distinguishes history from identity. Unfortunately, many Christians miss God's imputing of identity in scripture. But scripture is clear, that we are no longer sinners in Jesus Christ, but children born of God, living from Christ who is not a sinner. If Jesus Christ is your God, God makes himself one with you.
