And Tuesday, I’ll have @Sara Jade joining me at #NosVegas to talk about the WOMEN involved in indie music. WOMEN who want to get paid for their music online and live performances in BITCOIN. 💜🧡 She and I will kick off the night, 7:00 at We All Scream! The men can talk after we’re done 😉 View quoted note →

I got into radio 28 years ago. First, I learned to cut reel-to-reel tape in order to edit audio. I was playing CDs on air. Quickly, we automated to playing sound files. It didn’t work great, so we still had CDs and records as backup in the studio. Got a professional job. The studio had barely internet access but we had access to a new wire! (I would later work there and do news too). A wire? Actual wire? No, but it was a NEWS BROWSER. It looked like MS-DOS 🤣 was still playing commercials on 8-track carts. That didn’t last too long… I used to update an “events” phone line. People would call a number to listen to a recording of my voice spewing a list of events. I am pretty sure I recorded it on a VCR tape. The VCR was in our central engineering rack, which THEY LET ME TOUCH 🤣 omg imagine Alex letting me near the rack!!!!! 🤣 Automation quickly took over in 1999 and I started producing out of market shows that were automated. I learned to hack the station software so I could transfer MP3s into a multitrack editor rather than recording in real time. Engineer’s worst nightmare 😆 (I would also later learn hacks around our EMR in detox, I can always find the hidden shortcut). Moved to Phoenix, did mornings, survived the consolidation period by stealing other people’s jobs. Don’t hate the player, hate the game. We sent our show to Tucson and Tulsa. Call it “syndication” all you want, but we were consolidating the industry. Soon, we were going balls out with MP3s and iPods. Giving out CDs at station events was soon to die… marketing budgets no longer existed… Recording Soapbox Sessions today and the talk Derek I have about tech & music made me think about all this. My rare generation went from reel to reels and carts and 8-tracks to cassettes and CDs to MP3 BitTorrent and iPods, to iPhones, Napster to Spotify, podcasting, and now paying for music over the Bitcoin lightning network. Here for it! ⚡️
