I speak about climate futures, mitigation and adaptation in the face of the climate crisis. ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ
The water level of #LakeGarda Italyโ€™s largest lake (370km2) is under pressure from weeks of dry winter weather and the Alps having only received less than 1/2 of its usual snowfall. Water level records have been kept since 1950. The graph shows a red line (maximum), a green line (average) and a yellow line (minimum) to give context to where the levels are today which 44.90cm Italy is bracing itself for another water scarce summer (See https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/italy-faces-new-drought-alert-after-another-dry-winter-2023-02-20/) The Copernicus Sentinel 2 ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ got this image of Isola San Biagio โ€” the island that is no longer an island (See https://nitter.lacontrevoie.fr/CopernicusEU/status/1627942812405665792) Water is becoming a major issue in many parts of the world as we continue to heat. image
In the race to create a good life for all but within planetary boundariesโ€”the sweet spot being the circle at the top left of this graphic,โ€”๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ทCosta Rica & ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡บMauritius lead the way! image Here is the research (2021): https://www.nature.com/articles/s41893-021-00799-z Here is the interactive dashboard:
#CycloneFreddy now described as a very intense tropical cyclone with wind speeds of 250km/h is set to brush past Mauritius on Monday. Having been on the island during a cyclone, I am wishing them safety as the winds can be truly terrifying. image
Some important data from instruments tracking the Thwaites Glacier in Antartica was released this week. Scientists lowered an Icefin ROV (pictured) into a borehole more than 500m deep and were able to get look at the glaciers underbellyโ€”what they found was extremely important. Much of the melting, caused by the heating ocean, is concentrated in places where the glacier is already under mechanical stress โ€” within massive cracks called basal crevassesโ€”some of which are more than 100m wideโ€”and which are melting at rates of up to 45m per year. Of course when these crevasses reach the surface, the ice sheet will, in all likelihood, experience a catastrophic collapse. This data is especially important if you live along the coast in the northern hemisphere, which experience a considerable sea level rise as a result of a Thwaites collapse Here is the research paper released this week: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05691-0 image
Understanding what is happening to glaciers and snow coverage in the Alps is extremely important as the Alps function as a โ€œwater towerโ€ for four of the major European river basins. These river basins provide as much as 90% of the water to lowland Europe! The Alps have one of the longest traditions of climate data collection, with air pressure, temperature and precipitation series dating back to the mid-18th century. Which is obviously very valuable in understanding current trends. But in a study just released researchers found a way to track snow coverage even further back than the 1850โ€™s by looking at growth rings of juniper shrubs instead of trees in the Alps. What they found has massive implications to downstream adaption as it highlights an alarming trend. #heating #adaptation #alps https://www.nature.com/articles/s41558-022-01575-3
Hey #[0] any reason why your pfp doesnโ€™t load for me on TestFlight? And I have checked others - normally if a pfp doesnโ€™t show and I click through to the profile it loads fine. Not in your case though no matter what I try ๐Ÿค” image
We are going through some things at the southern tip of Africa. On Monday the government declared a national state of disaster after 7 of our 9 provinces experienced extreme precipitation eventsโ€ฆ and it doesnโ€™t seem to be done as we look into Thursday. Much property and infrastructure has been badly damaged by the flood waters. This is happening against a backdrop of the atmosphere holding about 9% more water vapour than the 1850-1900 baseline.
