Personally I think the grant programs are TOO easy on developers Speaking from experience, grants in the physical world are incredibly rigorous to apply for and receive I’m a 2x applicant and recipient of both private and public grants in a different (but aligned etc) scientific field and the amount of hoops you have to jump through JUST TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION are very very difficult (including upfront documentation of every single expense you plan to incur and the methodology you plan to use for consistent measured productivity and output) Once you receive the grants not only are you expected to meet your upfront promises but ALSO you have to cover your own additional expenses to meet expectations following your work being publicized, such as travel to conferences and the provision of any promised field work once the grant runs out You also have to build your own systems infrastructure to ensure the board gets constant review updates along the way or your grant can be revoked
