I don't wholly agree. There were techies saying this about Windows* and sub mainframe sized computers. My bet is that something akin to Jevons Paradoxβ‘ happens, like with microcomputers onward and cars, with no net change in employment, and that the ratio of specialist jobs remains the same just in different places. Less mechanics but many more at the car manufacturer. I think declinist arguments are often wrong - there are still good parties but we're not necessarily invited. The future has always being learning and adapting, racing an egg-timer, sometime pain in the arse, called life.
* I had a conversation with someone in the 90s who argued that if Windows was too reliable they'd be out of a job. It essentially created modern technical support.
