people are going to go out and vote in november based mainly on fear of social judgment + out-of-context tiktok clips, and then proudly share an 'i voted' sticker on instagram for the likes best to mentally prepare now

the craziest thing about the placebo effect is that it still works even when you tell people that it's a placebo "The efficacy of open-label placebo was superior to that of no treatment. Relative to no treatment, the placebo, under each information condition, accounted for more than 50% of the drug effect." https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/scitranslmed.3006175

In a better world, every family will learn from children. You are in such a hurry to teach them. Nobody seems to learn from them, and they have much to teach you. —Osho

is there a good argument for living in california that does not involve the weather/temperature/beach etc.? i don't know many people who live there, but the ones who do only seem to mention the weather as the thing they like

don't say you read a book if you listened to it. say you listened to a book. one is not necessarily better than the other i'm just a stickler for telling the truth

everyone seems to use vs code so i understand i'm in the minority here but it's so damn bloated and full of extra services, extensions, etc. Sublime Text for me. it's as close to the charm of a notepad txt file as i can get without sabotaging my productivity.

the only drill i've ever owned has been this old corded Craftsman my dad gave me when i moved out after college, which was already ancient back then. it still works but the torque is shit, i couldn't even drive wood screws into a 2x4 the other day. plus it's heavy, and i've had to run extension cords all over which is a real pain image anyway i just got this bad boy and it's so much better in every way i feel like a kid on Christmas 😭 worth every sat image

i know Windows vs. Mac is a thing re: desktops & laptops, but i thought Linux was the industry standard for running servers and important computing infra, not Windows am i wrong or does enterprise deals + legacy equipment + laziness explain all these Windows servers out there?

just as novels are a trojan horse for truth, video games are a trojan horse for tech mastery and innovation - all the senior devs and tech leads i know got into coding because of video games - both bitcoin proof-of-work and LLM's grew thanks to gaming graphics cards

hi hello, spicy take of the day: "pescatarians" eat meat, fish muscle is meat. it's animal flesh. if you insist on trying to hang with the vegetarians just because you only eat aquatic flesh and not mammal flesh it's because fish and crustaceans gross you out a little, sort of the way bugs and worms gross you out, so you consider them a moral exception for aesthetic reasons. similar rationale as to why people always want to save the bees but not the wasps. bumblebees seem cuter and pollinate pretty flowers and fruits. wasps seem like vindictive jerks that just build grey papery nests or mud caves. it's an emotional/aesthetic decision trying to disguise itself as an ethical one

germany selling all its bitcoin and shutting down its nuclear reactors is such a profound self-own i have to believe they're still repenting from the whole hitler debacle and thought some additional self-imposed punishment was in order
