A "public ledger" does not require a blockchain. There can only be one secure and permissionless blockchain, the one with the most hashpower and energy expended ensuring its security. The most secure witness timestamp is the one performed on Bitcoin, because it is the most power-full time gain, and therefore ALL "public ledgers" that are not Bitcoin can simply be timestamped with Bitcoin OTS and the records published on something like nostr. My daughter is doing a science fair project on "color vision of animals." I learned that animals DO see color, they just don't see as many colors as we do. This is because the color red would makeit harder for some animals to see predators in the grasslands. They only have green and blue color receptors. We have red, green and blue. That's not to say they "only see black and white" but they might see the equivalent of what would be seen if you turned the red channel off in your monitor. That got me thinking about nostr... Why do we say nostr is purple? How can we see purple? How can we see violet at all if it is beyond blue? Then I realized that for us violet actually looks like red and blue mixed together. This means that our red receptors are mildly activated by violet. The nostr outbox relay model is like the color purple. Nostr relays that host events from people on other relays may exist outside our direct scope of view, but our nostr clients are still "activated" by these relays and therefore we are still able to see them but only partially.
