Hoch die anarchie. I do stuff, I make stuff, I am funny, but also, the CTO at Sovreign.io
Every so often there's a term that gets thrown around really loosely on social media. Being the pedantic asshole I am, I'd like to clarify something about the term circulating now.
PURITY TEST!!!
This term is used to mean any time someone deviates from perfection. It's being used to mean a "genuine belief check," which is not a proper use of the term.
Though perceptually, they seem like varying degrees of the same term, they're fundamentally different.
The whole reason why a purity test is unreasonable is because the person in question genuinely believes the thing they're saying but falls short of acting upon every facet of their belief.
[A Purity Test]
"I'm a cypherpunk who cares about privacy and digital security."
OH YEAH? WHY DON'T YOU RUN YOUR OWN DNS RESOLVER?!
No one is perfect and no one is expected to be.
[A Genuine Belief Test]
"I am a big advocate for the carnivore diet."
But, I know you haven't eaten meat in 10 years.
This pushback asserts that ones actions don't just fall short of perfect. This claim asserts that ones actions PROVE that you do not believe the claim you are making.
A purity test is ridiculous.
A genuine belief test is not.
Advocates for Nostr may say they believe in the promise of a decentralized protocol for Identity and communication but their actions seem to prove otherwise.
The claim is NOT that they don't use Nostr for a specific use of micro-blog, articles, video uploads, Photo uploads, cloud backups, cooking recipes, and every facet of their life so therefore they aren't perfect in their pursuit. The claim is: if you only keep an Npub ready so when the centralized platforms kick you off of them, so you have a fallback, one might say you don't genuinely believe in the prospect of Nostr.
[My conviction is palpable]
i sold all my fiat and went bitcoin only 2+ years ago.
i am back to fiat again now, banks have gotten even worse and i think i can add value
despite (some of) our best efforts we have failed to move the majority of liquidity to bitcoin
i will continue to use bitcoin, the tech is awesome, it is needed more than ever, i will continue to try my best to increase adoption
if you want to make me your enemy to motivate yourself bitcoin better, great, do it
