Every product in Arnika's Sound of Contamination report was flagged red, even when skin-contact parts were perfectly safe. Here's why that matters.
Published in February 2026 by Arnika and partners, the report tested 81 headphone models across Central Europe, finding hazardous substances in every sample.
The report found hazardous chemicals in all 81 headphone models tested. A genuinely important finding.
But its scoring flaw is hard to ignore: a product rated green on ear tips (the parts you actually wear) is still labelled red overall if its outer casing contains trace flame retardants. Detecting a substance is not the same as demonstrating harm.
