I got into a conversation with a neighbor yesterday. This was face to face. More and more rare nowadays. She's a mom. One of her sons is the same age as our oldest son: 26. I coached both of them in Little League. I feel old saying that. LOL. We got on the subject of housing. Both our sons were in the market to buy a house around here. They both came up shorthanded. They couldn't afford them. Like most areas housing became unaffordable for people just starting out during Covid. Housing and land prices more than doubled. I tried to explain why I thought this happened. I don't think I did a very good job. I'm going to try again here. Partly in the spirit of becoming a better writer and thinker. Like Kurt Vonnegut said, "If you can't write clearly, you probably don't think nearly as well as you think you do." So here we go. I think those with money have to find a place to park their cash. So they use real estate as a "store of value." They can make money off their money buying real estate. If they keep it in a savings it would lose value due to inflation. For years our family did this. I knew better. When I was single, in my late teens and early 20's, I thought I could get off the hamster wheel by saving money. So I owned mutual funds through Vanguard in my late teens and early 20''s. My money made more money in Vanguard than our local bank. Then I read Ishmael, quit working, gave up on our current system, and embarked on a learning journey to understand why why why. Back to Vonnegut again: "Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly; Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?' Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land; Man got to tell himself he understand” Back to our sons and store of value. I told her my hope is Bitcoin starts to make housing more affordable around here again. Why? Because those with money can make a lot more money off their money buying Bitcoin. It's a better"store of value." So they'll pull their money out of real estate and park it in Bitcoin. Customers will occasionally ask me about Bitcoin on the mail route. Because I write about it on social media.. The other day one offered to give me some of his money. I would invest it for him. And we would split the profits fifty fifty. I told him, "No, bitcoin doesn't work that way." "It's like the stock market, isn't it?" "No," I said "It's simpler. You buy what you are comfortable with and hold on to it for as long as possible. He gave a hesitating, "ok...." "No researching companies and taking advice from financial advisors. Bitcoin is simple. You will double your money in roughly 18 months. You want to hold it for at least 4 years, preferably 10. But once you hold it for any significant amount of time you will never want to get out of it. Yesterday someone left a Carl Sagan book about time in their mailbox. I can't remember the title. That morning I wrote about my interest in time. So if it was for me put it back in there on Tuesday, I will take a look at it. I wasn't sure. I also found an I Phone laying at the end of POW Rd. Thursday afternoon.I took it back to the office. Our Postmaster charged it. We know whose it is. I was asking on the Springbrook Township page. A few people responded. We'll get it back to its owner. I got stuck yesterday. Pulled out of a driveway in two wheel drive, took it a little wide, and the flat ditch full of snow sucked me in. When they plow they fill the ditches full of snow, so it looks like more road, Deceiving. Four wheel drive didn't even get me out. Thankfully a carrier I work with lives out by me. She was on her way home. She swung by and tugged me out with her tow strap. It didn't take much. I had the front shoveled out with a small shovel I carry with me. It was like emptying a 5 gallon bucket full of sand with a tteaspoon. Snow sugary; shovel small. It was work. Writing these every morning "is the cave I fear to enter" (see quote above). Writing to my "tribe" on the Internet is one thing. But I know some of my neighbors read these. Some of them have told me so. And they are who they are. I see a lot of them weekly when I deliver their Amazon packages. I worry what they'll think of me from what they've read. Then these lines by William Stafford come to me: "If you don't know the kind of person I am and I don't know the kind of person you are a pattern that others made may prevail in the world and following the wrong god home we may miss our star."
