Spinning Sun Ra’s Lights on a Satellite: Live at the Left Bank. I picked up this record last year, but this is my first time really sitting with it. I knew I had to be in the right state of mind for a Sun Ra record, and this one absolutely delivers. It blurs genres, bends conventions, and feels like a full journey. I even caught myself laughing during the instrumental cover of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in the best way possible. The section spinning now is one of the more toned-down jazz moments of this wild two-disc trip.

Still on a Van Morrison kick from last week and currently spinning Van Morrison’s It’s Too Late to Stop Now. Recorded live in Los Angeles and London during the summer of 1973, this is one of those rare live albums I keep coming back to. I’ve always been a big Van Morrison fan, and while I’m not the biggest live album person, there are only a handful I listen to repeatedly and this is definitely one of them.

Currently spinning Van Morrison’s Tupelo Honey. I may have overpaid for this copy since the sleeve is pretty stained, but I couldn’t help it. I’ve been putting off getting this album on wax for a minute, and when I found an OG first pressing, I figured I just had to snag it. Totally worth the fifteen bucks at my local record store. No regrets. “Tupelo Honey” is easily in my top five Van Morrison ballads, right up there with songs like “Crazy Love” and “Queen of the Slipstream.”

Now spinning a repress of Daddy Bug by Roy Ayers.
I’ve stopped doing the whole Record Store Day scramble. Instead, I pull up the day after and dig through what’s left in the bins, picking off the records that somehow got overlooked. Finding this still sitting there was wild. An album this smooth, this foundational, just waiting to be picked up.
The fact that this record also features Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Buster Williams, Herbie Mann, and Sonny Sharrock just makes it that much more dope.

Still thinking about @valleyboy’s set from yesterday at @kcrw @SchoolNight showcase at The Airliner. I actually wrote about one of his singles earlier this year and almost compared his voice to Jeff Buckley, which is not something I say lightly. Buckley is one of my all-time favorites, and Live at Sin-é still gets regular spins from me.
Last night, Valley Boy played a tight 30-minute set with songs from his upcoming album, and then he covered “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over.” I was honestly kind of stunned. I sat there with my eyes closed for part of it thinking, if I didn’t know better, this could’ve been Jeff Buckley. Since I never got the chance to see Buckley live, that moment hit in a real way.
If you haven’t checked out Valley Boy yet, give him a shot and spend some time with the music. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. I’ll have more thoughts and photos up on Blurred Culture soon.
