Still thinking about @valleyboy’s set from yesterday at @kcrw @SchoolNight showcase at The Airliner. I actually wrote about one of his singles earlier this year and almost compared his voice to Jeff Buckley, which is not something I say lightly. Buckley is one of my all-time favorites, and Live at Sin-é still gets regular spins from me.
Last night, Valley Boy played a tight 30-minute set with songs from his upcoming album, and then he covered “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over.” I was honestly kind of stunned. I sat there with my eyes closed for part of it thinking, if I didn’t know better, this could’ve been Jeff Buckley. Since I never got the chance to see Buckley live, that moment hit in a real way.
If you haven’t checked out Valley Boy yet, give him a shot and spend some time with the music. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. I’ll have more thoughts and photos up on Blurred Culture soon.

Throwing it back with a little Lena Horne today. Lena Horne at the Waldorf Astoria was a breakthrough moment for her and a major success. Beyond the accolades, what stands out most is how she used her platform to advocate for civil rights, even refusing to perform for segregated audiences during USO tours in World War II. More than just a great singer, she was a true cultural icon.

There are certain showcases at SXSW that I always make an effort to attend, and the British Music Embassy is always one of them. They consistently put together a fantastic lineup. I stopped by their day party on Monday and caught some exciting new artists including Ben Ellis, Andrew Cushin, Hanna Leal, and Adult DVD.
I also popped in for a quick set yesterday and caught Carmachine, along with one of the few artists I had scheduled to see twice this week, Amie Gadiaga. It’s always a good time at the British Music Embassy, and the soundtrack they bring from across the pond never disappoints. Plenty of good stuff coming out of the UK right now.

Before I head back out to catch some more music, here’s one last post.
The best part of @sxsw is having a schedule of artists you plan to see, but then randomly stumbling into a performance that blows your mind.
I headed over to @swandiveaustin to check out a band on the patio stage, but a group I’d never heard of was playing inside beforehand. Within about thirty seconds I was completely locked in.
The band was @slashneed, and their set hit like a shot of adrenaline. The mix of pounding electronic beats, punk energy, and full-on performance art turned the room into chaos in the best way possible. It was the kind of unexpected discovery that keeps you roaming from venue to venue during SXSW.
That burst of energy carried me all the way until about 3 in the morning.

Musicians I met during my first SXSW trips will always have a special place with me. I met Derek nine years ago at my very first SXSW when he was playing in Annabelle Chairlegs. He has since moved on from that band and has been a member of Daiistar for the past several years. They closed out the Spin Magazine and Typify showcase and sounded absolutely incredible. Always great seeing Derek jam, and I hope to catch him and the band again soon. Plus, he’s got my name, just spelled differently, so he’s got to be cool.

My first day out at SXSW gave me one of those full circle moments. Seven years ago I caught Turbo Goth for the first time, and this year I finally got to see them again at the Spin Magazine and Typify showcase at The Courtyard in Austin. Paulo and Sara were every bit as dope and sweet as I remembered. Our only interaction over the past seven years has been through social media, so getting to see them perform live again was a real treat.

Now spinning Stevie Wonder’s In Square Circle. This is the first clean copy of this album I’ve ever found in the wild in the used bins. “Overjoyed” is my favorite track here, and when you play it loud, you can really hear the intricacies in the production, especially the subtle sounds of nature woven into it. Such a beautiful song.
