The Soviet Venera probes are my favorite missions to another planet. They managed to successfully land on a planet that is 460C and 93 bars on the surface, and survive there collecting and sending data for 2 hours! A remarkable feat of engineering.

I’m no expert but it looks like Syria is shaping up to be similar to Afghanistan, where a religious fundamentalist government does not directly partake in terrorist attacks but condones groups’ operations on its territory. The US military will probably “bring freedom” there at a more significant scale sooner or later.
