THE BROKEN CREST
There is this painting that painted itself.
I'm not kidding.
I started it with a clear idea.
But the brush started doing something else.
I tried to go back to the original plan.
It didn’t work.
So I stopped fighting. I followed the brush.
And the painting became something I’d never imagined.
Stronger. More true.
Since that day I’ve learned: my job isn’t to control the painting.
It’s to listen while it reveals itself.

I was about to add another brushstroke.
Something stopped me.
Not a voice. A feeling.
"If you add this, you'll ruin everything."
I put down the brush. I looked at the painting from a distance.
It was right.
Sometimes the painting knows when it's finished before you do.
And learning to listen to that moment is more important than knowing how to paint.

I thought about it and no, I no longer make prints of my paintings.
I have made, and might someday make again, calendars — but that’s another story.
Some people tell me, “You could sell more.”
Maybe. But I’d lose the only thing that makes art different from everything else: uniqueness.
When you buy one of my paintings, you buy the only one that exists.
My hands and brushes have touched every millimeter of it.
Every imperfection is mine. Every decision was made only once.
A print can look like it — but it can never be it.
I don’t judge those who make prints.
I’ve simply chosen another path.
I’d rather sell less, and stay true to something that can’t be replicated.
Some things are meant to exist only once — like a moment, like a painting.

When I paint for myself, I paint for those who are like me.
