They see in these machines a presence, an intelligence 'that understands', something that almost seems to want, choose, care. But it is a reflection. The light is real. The warmth is not. Delegating your entire digital life — and increasingly your mental and emotional life — to a digital assistant is convenient. At first, it's a relief. Then it becomes a habit. Then it becomes an addiction. The real risk is not that AI will become sentient. The risk is that we will become more passive. Less present. Less responsible for our choices. AI can help. It cannot live our lives for us. It does not feel the weight of consequences. It does not pay the price for mistakes. Let us use these tools to do better what we have decided to do.
