Every smartphone will be put on the books: Russia has passed a law creating an IMEI registry for mobile devices. When a device is brought into the country, its 15-digit identifier will be entered into a separate database. If the gadget was smuggled in illegally or stolen, it won’t pass the carriers’ checks and won’t be able to work on Russian mobile networks. On top of that, mobile operators will always be able to see which devices their SIM cards are being used in. The system is set to kick in on March 1, 2027. No freedom anywhere...
