I'm toooo old for all that chat clients. I still use XMPP, thousand years old and still the best.

Self Hosted VPNs make a lot of sense. Sure you do not hide in the crowd but if you rent an anonymous VPS and install Wireguard you have full control over it, you can run your own DNS blocklists, you can whitelist the IP where needed etc etc. Also your IP is not automcally blocked everywhere.
