Finished with season 2 of Dark Matter. It was pretty frustrating overall, notably because of the two bottle episodes, the changes they made to how the central speculative technology functions, some obvious plotholes, and having way too many plots going at the same time.
But I think my biggest take away from this season is that whoever wrote this show was a huge Luddite. If you have multiverse travel, obviously there are issues with that, and then also obviously we should expect this to be a huge boon to the universes involved, unless you think that interversal warfare and/or authoritarian takeover is likely. (Not that this is an argument that the show makes.)
And the whole plan to seal the technology away is stupid! There’s a whole multiverse! There are, per the rules they have established, not just a multiverse full of people who could discover this technology, but many additional multiples of all the individuals involved in getting the technology to work! You can build a second The Box, and you should assume that someone would, but better this time, with some actual defenses and biometrics and in a location not expected to be in a populated area.
I don’t know, there was occasionally some cool or interesting stuff in there, but the writing let me down, and if they were going to do a second season, they should have focused it a bit more, either on the intensive character stuff or (my preference) the social and societal consequences of being able to walk freely through the multiverse.

Just finished S2E4 of Dark Matter. I was convinced that the show wouldn’t get a second season, because where would it even go from the end of the first season? The central mystery and its wrinkles had all been resolved, and they had opened up a huge can of worms that didn’t seem to have a payoff.
So we’re four episodes into the second season, and I’m still asking that question, because there are a bunch of different characters all doing their own thing across the multiverse, with disconnected storylines, and I’m thinking to myself … is this going anywhere? Will this cohere into something meaningful? We’re following five storylines now by my count, and … are they going to intersect with each other? Do they relate to each other?
I’m eager to see how the second season develops partly because I have so little idea what the writers are trying to get at and where they’re going with it all. The high-concept scifi nonsense is what I’m there for, and they’re really drip-feeding it, but the potential is definitely there, even if the execution is, if I’m being generous, meandering and unfocused.
S2E5 might be one of the worst episodes of television I’ve seen in the last few years. We abandon out extant plotlines to spend time with a variant Jason as he’s depressed for a while, and I guess I can see where a writer might think that spending time charting out what finding happiness looks like for Jason is important … but it’s a full hour spent on someone who incredibly disconnected from what are really far too many plotlines, far too long, offers little insight into the characters, and contributes nothing to the overall plot.
How do you spend a tenth of a season on this?

Executive: Alright, so I saw the first cut of the film, and I gotta say, fantastic stuff. But I do have some notes.
Director: Okay …
Executive: Some of the death scenes, you show a lot.
Director: We had agreed on hard R?
Executive: Yes, absolutely, it’s a horror film, we show everything.
Director: Oh, right, good.
Executive: The problem is how the film treats men and women differently.
Director: It … doesn’t, I don’t think? Do you have an example?
Executive: Right, it doesn’t, that’s the problem. Do you read many academic papers?
Director: Uh, no?
Executive: Shame. Molitor & Sapoisky, 1993. They did a study of gender is horror films, and found that men were victims more often, but that women take around twice as long to brutally die. So that’s industry standard now.
Director: I … cannot imagine that’s what they meant by that study. Or that it says that.
Executive: Right, and per Cowan & O'Brien, 1990, sexually active women should also have longer, more gruesome death scenes. This is the scientific approach to moviemaking. Well-studied stuff.
Director: Sorry, you want more violence against sexually active women?
Executive: It’s what the literature says, and at this studio, we believe in science-based filmmaking. And you don’t have final cut on this.
Director (turns to the editor): You’re okay with this?
Editor: Statistically speaking, 90% of editors are. So yes, I follow that guidance.

I’ve wanted to write a space opera for a long time, but I just do not trust myself to have what I feel is the necessary level of uninhibited whimsy and disregard for hard facts that the genre feels like it demands.
I guess this brings with it the question of what I think space opera even is, and to me, it’s the set pieces, the gimmicks, and the melodrama, all of which are at least somewhat antithetical to the more rationalized approach that I’m used to.
I suppose I think of space opera as being fantastical by nature of its resistance to fundamental facts about space, like the high energy costs of getting there, how uniform it is, how vast travel times are, the difficulties of defense and offense, etc. And then also ignoring some broader emergent strategies like economies of scale, globalization, hegemony, standardization, etc.
I’ve seen people suggest that space opera just needs more rationalization, that you just need the correct series of hacks to physics or technology or certain interstellar events, and that this will somehow get you to a perfect setting that emulates space opera while operating on logic, technology, and science.
I think this is … sort of fundamentally at odds with space opera, and like trying to get to a car by building it out of pieces of horse.
The proper way to write a space opera is to keep things loose, count on the audience to understand the vibe you’re going for, and then get out before anyone asks too many questions about how the sublight system works or what the Galactic Imperium’s tax policy is like.
And if you could build a solid system that explains all your grandiose set pieces and gimmicks, space opera would be hiding all that anyway, so you’d have done all that work for … just love of the game, I guess.

I feel like as soon as I started writing I would at least want a sketch for how hyperspace works, whether droids are sentient or not, what the actual tech level is, why they don’t have advanced computers, why it makes any economic sense to have different cities on different planets, all these things that feel, to me, like they would get in the way of having a Romp.

The funny part is that from this I can’t even tell how far you are into the game. You might be saying that at 200 solved, or 500 solved, or higher.
It’s a bit funny that one of the consistent pieces of marketing for this game is that there are +1000 puzzles inside it, but then there doesn’t seem to be a way within the game to track how many you’ve actually done. My guess is that I’ve just hit the two-thirds mark with between 600-700 puzzles solved, but that’s from a rough count of areas.
Fatigue has definitely set in, but I know if I leave the game now, it’s going to be much more difficult if I come back to it.

Upsetting etymological fact: skulduggery has nothing to do with skulls. It instead comes from the Scottish word “sculdudrie”, meaning adultery. “Skull”, meanwhile, comes from the Old Norse skalli.
I’d always thought that “skullduggery” was shady business, you know, digging up a skull or something, like it has the air of grave robbing. But nope!
Worse, I can find no good source as to where “sculdudrie” comes from, or how it came to be a part of Scots.
I hate it when words that seem like they should be related aren’t. :(

Is there any chance we might get a list of the known classes or something similar, especially as DP! goes on? I know so far we’ve only seen a handful, but I at least am already feeling unsure I remember all of them.
Yes, this is a distinct possibility, I have them all listed in a spreadsheet, though do need to change the workflow somewhat so that only those classes which have been listed in chapters are exposed to the reader. It's on my TODO list.

The phrase “psychic damage” has somehow entered my internal lexicon as a way of describing how I’m feeling. I see or read something, I feel a negative shift in emotions that I know will put me in a bad place for an hour or two, and I think “ah, this is psychic damage”.
On the one hand, this is a helpful reframe of negative impacts on my emotions as a temporary external event that I’ll inevitably recover from. But on the other hand, I wonder why this sticks for me instead of something a little more mature, considered, and nuanced. There are obviously better, more accurate descriptions of everything I’m lumping into “psychic damage”.
So I’m skeptical that it’s a good piece of kit, but it seems to have stuck.

Movie Review: You Can See Everything
Full spoilers follow.
I do kind of wonder how this movie reads to someone who hasn’t seen Nathan Fielder’s previous work, or to someone who isn’t familiar with either The Dropout (2022) or the crimes of Elizabeth Holmes. I watched this movie on a Thursday night, and it was showing in four of the ten screens at my theater, all of them at capacity. This was astounding to me, given that this is the treatment a blockbuster gets, and to me, Nathan Fielder is a weird little gremlin, Elizabeth Holmes a high-profile flash-in-the-pan curiosity.
This movie is largely not about the crimes of Elizabeth Holmes, which are narrated only briefly at the beginning, not relitigated too much, and somewhat beside the point. It’s a movie that’s instead about psychology and people. There’s a point in the movie where Nathan asks Liz whether he was selected because he couldn’t ask the science questions, and she says that she saw this as a human story. I’m not always a fan of a movie baldly stating its thesis, but it worked here.
One of the things that I love about Nathan Fielder is how much he takes a funhouse mirror approach to topics, amplifying them beyond reason for both humor and to examine them. I’m one of those people who takes The Rehearsal (2022) to largely be about anxiety, especially in its first season. What if you practice well enough to always say the perfect thing? What if you could research a person perfectly so you knew the proper way to act around them? What if you exercised inhuman amounts of control?
And so Elizabeth Holmes is the perfect subject for Nathan Fielder, because she’s the ultimate unknowable woman. She has a reputation for being deceptive and manipulative, but is that actually true? Does she believe many false things? Does she lie as easily as she breathes? Or is she a person being controlled, someone who has, through her relationships, allowed herself to be ignorant, allowed herself to believe dreams that were manifestly untrue?
The character of Billy Evans, then, I take to both be a “colorful character” of the type that Fielder likes to highlight … but also as a reflection of the Fielder character himself. Nathan is always watching, listening, and hovering in the background, and so is Billy. Billy wants to know everything, see everything, plan everything, manipulate everyone. I feel like, if you haven’t seen his other stuff, you might think this is a stretch, but manipulation (and often acknowledgement of that manipulation) is built into both Nathan for You and The Rehearsal. Billy is undeniably the villain of the piece, menacing and angry, but part of his role is as a foil to Nathan.
And the last of our characters was the surprise of Amanda Seyfried, who I now love dearly. She’s a voice of reason, a breath of fresh air, and comes crashing into the movie with opinions on the characters involved. She’s the other foil to Nathan, often looking at his waffling and saying “are you blind? this is bullshit” about it. But she’s also an actress portraying Holmes, doing her own interpretation of events, injecting her own beliefs, and sometimes acting slippery about her culpability in telling Holmes’ story. She comes to Billy’s house on the pretense that she’s going to get him to let his guard down and ends up yelling at him. She cuts through the shit. I wouldn’t have thought, going in, that Amanda Seyfried would be acting as audience surrogate, and yet …
In case it wasn’t obvious, I really loved this movie. There’s so much to chew on, so much to unpack. Nathan is telling the story, controlling what’s seen and what’s heard, enamored with his subject, and, obviously, turning the spotlight back on himself in the process.
For what it’s worth, I thought most of what this movie is doing is very intentionally geared toward telling exactly this story. The film focuses on the ambiguity of communication with the “Who’s on First” bit when the actual case against Holmes was about a large number of materially false statements, and I absolutely do not buy that all of these were a case of her saying one thing while everyone else heard a different thing. And obviously Nathan Fielder is playing up his own character for the film; he knows how it looks to have him lurking in the background like he’s hiding behind a pillar, wearing headphones like a guarantee that he can listen back to a conversation later to make sense of it. Still great though.

I’ve gotten to “an” ending of Order of the Sinking Star, and while I don’t think I understand the story all that well, the puzzles have been pretty fun. I do have a few different gripes against different aspects of the game, and against some of the specific puzzles, but it’s overall pretty minor. The mirror puzzles in particular sometimes felt like they required me to stare at the puzzle and solve the whole thing in my head in one go, and I would much rather work through a puzzle by thinking “what’s the next logical step”.
Still, I recommend it, and doubt that I’ll change my mind once I’ve mopped everything up. (The game boasts about having more than a thousand puzzles, so whatever endgame and postgame exist might be quite long.)
