So let me get this strait. The EU made their own EU approved social media network that will require digital ID and stuff (and seems to be auto posting some details online) and then this instance has issues because they using bluesky's protocol which is fake decentral. And now the EU based thing has issues because Bluesky is rate limiting it? Surely I am misunderstanding right? Because that hellhole sounds like a shitshow. I can run a nostr relay any time i'd want to take on the legal risk (which I don't) and have no such issue, no corporate overlord above my head, and a working search that does not depend on some org.

Matrix is extremely daunting to host, the fact you need your own synapse instance, which I recall needs a https proxy in front (maybe it can do https natively now not sure), probably needs a database, it then needs a livekit server for the calling, a bridge for the calling and you have to make sure the federation actually works properly. An the easy part to get all that done? "Not suitable for production". There's probably ways to do it but it was very intimidating. Similar with Armada but not as bad, you needed a nostr relay (the easy part), a livekit server, a push server if you wanted to go truly standalone and a blossom server. Still to many servers but they did have a setup script at least. But now? Now its one server. One rust binary and you are setup. Amethysts bug bounty thing rubbed me the wrong way. Report not submitted, back to Ditto. If there is a bug so blatant that it ruins the experience for everyone there shouldn't be a need to pay to report it through the proper channel. That just means I either have to pay or me submitting it without that means the bug won't be fixed even if it effects everyone. Because your right, I don't care if its fixed or not, this was about the quality of your app I was helping with to notify you of the issue. I'm fine sticking to other desktop clients until its fixed. What bug you ask? I don't need to tell you. You will hear it from every other user this impacts. And if its only me who triggers this within a minute and my usual skill of breaking things? Well then I don't need you to waste your time fixing it for just me, I'm fine using something else that already works even if I really like the client. I 100% get that if I wanted some obscure thing fixed or implemented that i'd have to pay for that effort. But you should really add a clarification that these bounties are optional for major bugs because now you simply won't know.

But behind that joke is something really cool, Nostella actually works on all those platforms from the single binary. The post was a troll, the upload wasn't. Thats right, you can run nostella's binary on Linux, MacOS (untested but should work), and Windows. So here's the progress on Nostella so far since its really taking shape now. - I found and fixed more ways that the mesh could decide to put to much load on a single relay, it has a coordinator now that is meant to prevent to many on deciding to query the same relay. Because of this please don't use anything below 0.5, they may not be safe for the Nostr network in larger numbers. - Performance was enhanced an immense amount since I last posted about it, according to my agent testing it its now comparable to relays like fastr and ditto relay (closer to fastr than to ditto on the underpowered container). - It has memory management on board now so all you need to run this is just good storage (and if your really is super busy I assume a decent cpu). It automatically adapts based on how much free ram is available, if you got a ton of free ram why should we care about optimizing the ram after all? Then the more ram is being consumed the tighter the ram controls become and the more we rely on the CPU/Disk to compensate. - NIP-50 had a big overhaul inspired by the Ditto relay. This does now double the storage space required, but it actually reliably fetches past events instead of just recent ones. - The relay is downloadable from the relay if its the cross platform version. So people discovering your relay can also download their own nostella copy for their own peer. - Nodes that aren't public anyway no longer advertise themselves, I noticed those advertisements were pointless since they need to connect to an UltraPeer anyway to become part of the mesh. - Kind 36669 was replaced with kind 33737 since there was overlap with something else. Both used a different structure and nostella had expire times set so the old ones won't disrupt, but I still prefer to keep this clean with its own kind. - It now has a --standalone mode if you don't like the aggregation and meshing it does. Want a classic relay but like nostella's design otherwise? You got it now. If you do run a nostella node without --stanalone mode please keep an eye on it. I am now multiple simulations in and it should be at the point where I do not expect much risk from these nodes to regular relays. But if I did have an oversight you are still participating in a self regulating mesh, so if it has bugs and people need you to shut yours down / update make sure you are available for that in these early stages. @Vitor Pamplona some amethyst feedback now I updated to the latest. Performance seems good again, possibly a little bit longer on cold start but smoother scrolling so that is a good trade for me and I think my days of sticking to 1.12 are finally over. Theres 2 small things that seperate the DM's from me liking the experience on Armada and hating the experience on Amethyst. I don't want the concord groups mixed in with my DM's. I already customize amethyst not to do that, but it would be nice if me toggling concord off in the DM section was account synced. (If its not already, it didn't remember it from the last version I tried it on). But the biggest gripe that makes me hate it is the lack of an account synced option to mark a DM as hidden. Armada lets me do this, its then gone until that person messages me again or until I want to message them through their profile. This allows me to hide the DM's of people I don't intend on talking to anytime soon but don't want to block either and helps me declutter. The way to implement it ill leave up to you, but one simple way is marking it the same way you sync app settings where you save a timestamp for that npub so it knows not to show it if the last message was prior to that point. Interesting take on the whole AI cloned adobe thing : Now lets be honest, it didn't clone adobe. It made a UI thats very similar but under the hood obviously its a completely different thing and won't work as well. But the fact that many things including for example Minecraft are so easily cloneable, in an open source way does mean the future is hobbyists contributing LLM PR's to software and the software growing on its own merrits, rather than large corporations developing that software with subscription models. I actually said it today to someone, the impact of Ai on the job market will be immense but the value society gets in return will likely be far greater. Since were going to have an abundance of games, software and other stuff now its so easy to build it. And Nostr itself benefits a lot from it to, since previously most people willing to spent a ton of time doing free software were highly ideologically motivated and wanted to gatekeep those platforms. But now that its democratized you see places like Nostr thriving from contributions by people who can't spend 500 hours building something cool, but now can build that same cool thing in a weekend or two with AI.
