#DeltaChat evolved according to needs of people under repression and continues to do so. The more ignorant and exchangeable we make #chatmail relays, the less their operators have to worry. Having metadata-less, fast and cheap instant messaging relays, that can also operate when 99% of the Internet vanishes in a region, is a key goal. Some way to go still but, already now, is there any other real-world solution that provides better service in internet-repressed regions in 2025?

Some people in #Iran successfully use delta with national email providers when outside Internet is cut. #deltachat designs are #OfflineFirst using delay tolerant protocols. Messages are queued when a path is blocked. email servers are made for this and run at planetary scale. Messages crossing the border may arrive three days later but they arrive. Peoples can stay in private touch across time and space, to the extent possible in current breakdown times. Which is what delta is about.

Tomorrow our ten day #DIFF gathering in Freiburg in the black forest starts. Around 40 people from various projects, contexts and countries are joining ... And would you believe it? There is no date/clock scheduling to speak of, no hour slots etc On Friday the 13th we might do live streaming sessions with talks and demos but the focus generally is on in-person hanging out and work, in a relaxed manner. Last week four new #chatmail relays popped up from four different continents from four different entities. Permission-free interoperability based on #cryptography ... That's how we like it and how it generally is with the email system: separation of transport and apps. App developers can't access messages, and relay operators can not break e2ee encryption. Fwiw May 14th there is another round at a #Moscow court where our lawyers will convey this impossibility for #deltachat to hand over data.

#deltachat ist a community messenger much more than a monetary focused enterprise. Its offspring developments, the growing #chatmail and #webxdc efforts are also community grounded. Is there any other cross-platform FOSS messaging project, implementing #RightToExit on many levels, putting all interesting and sensitive computation and interactions into end users devices, constantly and radically denying centrality/control of billionaires and big-tech, to the extent currently possible?

"but e-mail !1!!!" Is probably still a number one objection from experts and power users who refuse to fathom that e-mail protocols are a viable option for instant messaging even if it demonstrably works, is fast and secure :) We'd be happy if someone engaged in a proper comparison with xmpp and matrix specs and impls, really the only three messenging protocols deployed and implemented at scale. (Can't compare that with Signal or WhatsApp which don't have wire specs!).
