I believe we should avoid asking questions that force the other person to relive their pain while answering—
especially when we realize our question might embarrass or sadden them, or reopen an old wound.
Whether the topic concerns someone's child, marriage, offspring, job, business, or divorce, if you know the subject is sensitive for them, it is best not to bring it up.
Asking about everything is not necessarily an act of empathy; sometimes, being considerate of the other person's feelings is the true form of empathy.
