The internet loses it. We love some of the Baby Keem songs, but what does he know about autonomous AI assistants? More than most.
Ok back to politics: The Pentagon quietly asks Boeing and Lockheed Martin to assess their exposure to Anthropic. The blacklist machinery starts moving.
Thursday, Feb 26 — Jack Dorsey announces Block (Square, Cash App, Afterpay) is cutting 4,000 jobs (40% of the company) because of "intelligence tools."
Amodei publishes his statement: Anthropic "cannot in good conscience" allow its AI to be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell posts the deadline: comply by 5:01pm Friday or be designated a national security risk. That evening, Sam Altman sends an all-staff memo: OpenAI holds the same red lines. An open letter begins circulating — signed by employees at Google and OpenAI urging their companies to stand together. Pentagon's Emil Michael responds by calling Amodei a "liar" with a "god complex."
Friday, Feb 27 — Altman goes on CNBC. The employee letter grows to 360+ signatures.
Trump posts on Truth Social calling Anthropic "Leftwing nut jobs" who made a "DISASTROUS MISTAKE." Orders every federal agency to immediately cease use of Anthropic technology.
The 5:01pm deadline passes. Anthropic doesn't comply. Hegseth officially designates Anthropic a "Supply Chain Risk to National Security," a label historically reserved for foreign adversaries, never before applied to an American company. GSA removes Anthropic from the federal AI testing platform. Musk posts "Anthropic hates Western Civilization."
Anthropic publishes a new statement: they're going to court. They note Hegseth doesn't have the statutory authority to extend the designation beyond DoW contracts. They will not back down. Then, OpenAI holds an all-hands. Altman tells staff the government is willing to give OpenAI the exact same protections Anthropic was just blacklisted for demanding. An OpenAI official adds: the deal fell apart because Amodei's blog posts "offended" Pentagon leadership. Not the red lines. The blog posts (lolll).
What. A. Newscycle. AI is inescapable in ways it seemingly never has been. And I'm not just talking about obvious ChatGPT posts. In 48 hours, AI became music industry news, employment news, national security news, constitutional law news, and front page news.
