While many have questioned Anil Kapoor's inclusion in TIME's 100 AI cover, his court victory over unauthorized AI use of his likeness and iconic catchphrase “jhakaas” paves the way for much-needed AI regulations. With deepfake videos and AI-generated content spreading rapidly, the risks of manipulation and exploitation have become undeniable. AI’s growing ability to mimic voices, images, and personas without consent is a serious threat—not only to celebrities but to society at large. Strong regulations are essential to protect individuals from these digital violations and ensure the responsible use of AI technology. As AI continues to advance, it’s no longer just an entertainment industry issue. We’ve seen AI-generated content used during political events, raising alarms about misinformation and its potential influence. Without a clear legal framework, these technologies will only become more invasive and harder to regulate. Anil Kapoor’s case underscores the need for governments to act quickly and set standards that protect privacy, identity, and intellectual property. AI innovation should not come at the cost of ethical responsibility, and comprehensive regulations are the key to maintaining that balance. image

What even is this metric of pre-PDT (product and tech)? OLX India reported a profit of INR 23 Cr pre-PDT costs, “annualised” as of July 2023. A “profitable” OLX India with a net revenue of INR 285 Cr get acquired for 535.54 Cr (less than 2x revenue multiple). Apparently income from export services billed by OLX India to it Amsterdam-based holding entity OLX BV made roughly 55% of its income in FY 2021. This looks like a win-win for both CarTrade which is trading at 1/3rd of its listing price and Netherland based Prosus (owned 99% of OLX) which was looking to divest from loss making OLX Auto. “D2C businesses start to mature only at the Rs 600-1,000 crore level”. “Any founder saying they’re selling for synergy purposes at the Rs 50-100 crore level does not make sense” “While scaling revenues from Rs 2 crore to Rs 20 crore is a 10X jump, the potential of the business cannot be gauged based on an increase that sharp” One of the reasons why VCs are cherry picking D2C startup in the post-Covid world. But the existing FMCG players are interested in the tech capabilities and customer database of these D2C brands and end up shelling 4-7x of revenue during the acquisition. It’s a win-win for both D2C as well as FMCG. D2C founders end up making more money than the CEOs of these FMCG companies make in a lifetime, and FMCG companies have the trendy products in their portfolio. "Restaurant Packing Charges" on your Zomato/Swiggy bill is unlawful. Recently a consumer court in Gujarat has ruled that fast food chains KFC and Pizza Hut should not charge extra fees for packaging charges from consumers (1) According to the guidelines by the Department of Consumer Affairs, "A component is inherent in the provision of the food and beverages ordered by a customer. Pricing of the product, therefore, is expected to cover both the goods and service components." Basically the price of the product or service is believed to include all operating expenses as well as profit margins in it. In 2021, a consumer court in Hyderabad had slapped a INR 50,000 fine on a restaurant for the same (2) Also restaurant packaging charges during takeaway is also illegal (3) Although it is the restaurant partners who decide the packaging fee and not Zomato/Swiggy, Zomato/Swiggy should remove this option from their platforms. Imagine living in the Mad Men era where you can crack open a cold one in the office. New office liquor policy in Gurgaon (Haryana) means employees can go to the office and start their day with a can of cold beer and end it with a sip of wine while attending the meetings that could have been an email. For those who are unaware of Mad Men, it's a TV show set in the fast-paced world of an advertising agency which vividly portrays the 1960s office drinking culture, where characters frequently engaged in daytime alcohol consumption often as a tool for socializing, networking, and coping with stress. But sadly this new policy is only for corporates with 5000+ employees and 1 lakh-square feet office area with a 2000 square feet cafeteria. If (hoping when) it includes smaller offices, then Gurgaon would definitely win the startup battle against Bangalore. Source: Original Post: Date: 10 Aug 2023

In India EV news today, a few 2 wheeler EV OEMs are willing to share any customer data required by the government. First these 2 wheeler EV makers did not comply with FAME II localisation norms—mandating at least 50% of their components in the EVs be indigenously manufactured or locally sourced, because they weren’t able to source local materials. This must have been clear to them at the manufacturing stage. Then they passed on the subsidy to customers for sales numbers. Now after the government asked these EV makers for their share and delisted them from NAB portal, they are requesting them to reinlist without paying the government since somehow it’s unfair to damage a company’s future business because of past wrongdoings. And what about the subsidy that is passed on to the customers? Apparently they can be asked to return the subsidy amount. And for this EV makers are willing to share customer data. TIL Apple had a phygital strategy in 2007 even before the term phygital was coined “Imagine walking into a participating Starbucks, hearing a great song, and being able to instantly download it onto your iPod or iPhone. We think this is very cool.” - Steve Jobs Starbucks customers could wirelessly browse, search for, preview, buy and download music from the iTunes® Wi-Fi Music Store at Starbucks onto their iPod® touch, iPhone™ or PC or Mac® running iTunes while at a participating location. Customers will be able to browse, search and freely preview millions of songs, including a new “Now Playing” service which displays the name of the song playing in the Starbucks store at that moment, then easily buy and download songs or albums directly to their device. Key takeaways about health insurance from “How India Buys Insurance” report by policy bazaar 1. For 56 per cent, a recommendation from friends and family was the main trigger for purchasing health insurance 2. About 58 per cent respondents said they trust the brands they are familiar with or the brands that have been around for a long time, both while purchasing health insurance. 3. 40 per cent respondents cited high premiums as the reason for not purchasing health insurance 4. 53 per cent found the products/ process difficult to understand and thus, dropped out 5. 80 per cent respondents across health and life insurance looked online for information before purchasing the policy. However, over 85 per cent ended up purchasing offline primarily through an agent they knew or was recommended by friends and family. All of these are opportunities to tap into. Stockholm Syndrome was first used by the media in 1973 when four hostages were taken during a bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden. The hostages defended their captors after being released and would not agree to testify in court against them.
