In my never-ending journey to de Google my life photos was my most recent project. I looked into self hosting via immich and a e2e photo service called ente. I went with ente as it had cross device support, ability to share photos and albums via links, and an overall Google photo experience as far as ease of use (others using my plan need simple). I'm happy to report so far it's going very well and I'm quite pleased with ente on android (from zapstore) and the Mac os client. While I didn't use a lot the web client is great and so far ahead of Google photos web client. The organization is great and being able to have all your photos encrypted is amazing. Ente does little things like refer to your photos as memories which is just good attention to detail in my opinion. The only con I can find so far is the price per GB you pay for ente is almost double than google (on starter plans). This doesn't surprise me as Google will scan all your photos and further monetize the data. I'm personally happy to pay the premium to know I can keep an offsite copy of my photos in a very easy accessible way without anyone being able to scan or scrape data from them. Ente.io
