I see monogamy as a personal preference in intimacy, rather than a decision driven by social/moral standard.
Being territorial and possessive with our lovers is human nature, just like how looking at pretty girls/guys is human nature. My animal instinct find monogamous romance to be very sexy, and it speaks to my raw fantasies.
Beyond that, monogamy is a good strategy for protecting the stability/wealth of a family unit. Countries/ religions unite people by rules, joint believes and loyalty, that applies to romantic partnership too. After all, families are tribes.
There are a lot of tradeoffs between exclusive and open relationship. Fundamentally people value different things, for some of us protecting our tribe is top priority, others might have to prioritize other things. I wouldn’t put moral judgement on people’s choices.
