The problem isn't choice. You're free to publish your bank statement on X or Nostr, if you will.
The problem lies in the deception backed by corporate and state organs, followed by your misconceptions, as you claim privacy where there is none.
"An anonymous system empowers individuals to reveal their identity when desired and only when desired; this is the essence of privacy." - It's NOT a forced choice.
Monero is the only real crypto at this point. With Bitcoin you have no privacy, and ZCash twisted it around.
"A semi-anonymous system empowers individuals to hide their identity when desired and only when desired; this is the antithesis of privacy." - It's akin to a privacy kindergarten.
With 50% of Zcash transactions were shielded, on-chain traceability might drop to about 70%, in line with known heuristic techniques. The 70% includes transparent, fully traceable transactions, plus graph clustering/patterns in the shielded pool.
Zcash has no equivalent implementation to Dandelion++, and the IP/timing correlations are unaffected by shielding. Chainalysis will still boast a 90% overall flow traceability through the use of node-based surveillance.
The non-uniformity of transactions in optional privacy undermines even "private" transactions without user-level op-sec. The transparent ledger, exchange registers, and said heuristics narrow the shielded pool significantly.
"When my identity is revealed by the underlying mechanism of the transaction, I have no privacy."
Ergo, ZCash is selling a lie. The pump is artificial and designed to perpetuate the lie.
