Obelisk update : Nostr Only Discord-like voice and chat groups
Posted here two weeks ago about Obelisk when I shipped it at @La Crypta 's IDENTITY Hackathon. It's been through a heavy rewrite since. The Nostr relay based groups I had as 'next on the roadmap' last time are shipped.
A few things I leaned into because Nostr makes them possible:
- Nostr only. You go with your identity.
- Nostr relay based groups. Channels, replies, reactions, admins, kicks, bans.
- Channel categories and ordering. Discord-style sidebar, drag and drop.
- Voice channels. Relay coordinated, peer to peer voice and media channels.
- Encrypted DMs. End-to-end, only you and the recipient.
- Zaps in every message. Send sats to any message.
- Blossom media. Use your own storage for images and files.
- No backend, no database. Pure frontend, talks straight to relays.

Hey Nostr! I've been building Obelisk for @La Crypta 's IDENTITY Hackathon and the public server is finally live. It's a Discord-style group chat (servers, channels, categories, roles, voice), but identity is 100% Nostr.
A few things I leaned into because Nostr makes them possible:
WoT-gated registration. Spam resistance comes from your follow graph, not captchas. If the server's reference Nostr account follows you, you're in.
- Zaps in every message via Nostr Wallet Connect (NIP-47).
- Archon, a resident bot + admin CLI that any AI coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) can drive to run the community.
- Games built in. Play Chain Reaction, Chess, or Tic-Tac-Toe against other members right inside the server.
- Kind-0 profiles. Your Nostr identity just shows up correctly.
- Real-time messaging over Socket.io, voice channels over a WebSocket audio relay, self-hostable via Docker.
Next on the roadmap is Nostr relay-based groups, so the whole thing becomes interoperable with the wider Nostr ecosystem instead of a walled garden.
It's fully open and the public showcase server is open to anyone with a Nostr key. Come log in and break things:

#askdevs there is no way to prevent an untrusted client to read DMs once they are decrypted, i mean if you use NIP07 they cannot write new events, etc, but once the content is decrypted any shady client would be able to read it?

I mean in the compatibility side (like to scale a bit and actually work with the relays) , maybe is a simple answer and I too tired haha, don't know if the question is clear, let me know your thoughts!
will be possible in the future to rotate a nostr profile to another private key? or what makes the most sense is to simply create another profile and resign with the new keys all the events and first of course tell your previous followers that you will be in a new npub

Second time in my life deleting my instagram account, I dont freaking know why I created this last a few months ago. Last year I was 10 months with my first IG account deleted, that account that I had since I was 11 year old , brain terribly hardwired that and when I started using it again, it is imposibble to control. #asknostr as nostr grows and relays have to contain more and more data, the risk of not reaching certain posts increases as far as I know, is there any way to know or verify that the e.g the I share at least one relay with all the people I am following?, The relays that index all npubs or whatever are big enough to be responsible of doing this? Because #FOMO

Hey @Saifedean Ammous it would be interesting to hear a podcast with any guest discussing technological singularity, as I was reading Principiles Of Economics, there are many discussion that can surge about things that would be obviously ignored decades ago such as time preference if we don't die, or almost free goods with highly productive autonomous and replicant machines, and change dramatically when Super Intelligence is included or Longevity Escape Velocity, this thing added to the bitcoin standard mindset can result in stunning ideas, thanks!
hahah awesome my college wifi networks blocks the traffic to all social media, except NOSTR loool, it is almost impossible to block it all isn't it? I mean, to block it you should block the connection to every relay? or to block the connection to all ips that are not in a white list, which would make the internet connection stupidely useless? #asknostr #nostr
