If you could care less, then why don't you? 🤔

Yo hi! I usually post things about linguistics, science, biology, environmental science, health, and recently, some stuff on numbers. I'm an advocate for freedom of communication
I'm a bunch of things but I mainly focus on environmental science, training people into becoming scientists, and an array of aspects about communication. A strong future for humanity and life depends on good community and good communication. I accidentally became a linguist, and I've made a few alphabets, my latest one is called NewEng and it does a good job of encapsulating both English pronunciation & its accents, and English etymology.
Pretty shitty that Figma, an entirely web-browser-based app, which works flawlessly on Linux, decided to implement their local font connection service using a user-agent string that whitelists Windows and macOS and for literally no reason. Several people have made font connector apps for Figma on Linux but Figma themselves have not cos apparently it's too hard
Do you ever just randomly re-realise that like most people go to bed before midnight?
nearly 2 years ago, my chrome got hacked. (I don't use chrome any more don't worry)
All my accounts were compromised.
my mastodon account got used by someone in dallas, texas, usa; obviously not me since i'm in da nang, viet nam
anyway, my account was protected totp 2fa yet they still got in
after trying and failing to get back in, and filing at least 2 appeals, the mastodon team have "reviewed" my appeal and rejected it. based on what, i wonder? despite the amount of time it took to respond to me, this reeks of ai-management and is very clear that a human wasn't involved in this decision.
anyway, tl;dr:
mastodon accounts can apparently be accessed using session tokens even when you have 2fa/totp set up AND the staff/system will ban your account even after you regain control 🤷

I've just written a page about all the extensions I use that make my Gnome desktop actually usable. They're of course personal to my use cases, but some of them are fundamental requirements for me and it took a long time to discover them!
So if you're looking for ways to ease your workflow (because KDE is always a bit too beta for you) then check it out:

just a reminder if you use yay on arch, failed builds don't seem to clear themselves out! check your ~/.cache/yay for oversized folders :))

I so desperately want Linux to be my daily driver but every time I try to use it at my workplace, it fails on me. Today the failure was HDMI connection to the random TV in the classroom. The screen wouldn't stop flickering, totally unusable. My HDMI works perfectly with my monitor at home. And my HDMI works perfectly with this TV when I'm running Windows. How does a bug like this exist? For the fourth time in a row — for different reasons each time — my Linux laptop failed while teaching my class, due to unforeseeable issues. My laptop is from 2021, I think the GPU is 2019.
Remember the old days when you just used cash and ATMs? Yeah those days are still available actually

And some people still are bored and have no interest in anything
Is it depression?
Is it stupidity?
Is it narcissism?
I'm at a loss
A reminder:
If it's not a resounding "yes", it's a no.
People: "Windows is perfect, you nor a team couldn't improve on it if you tried"
Me: *kills dwm.exe cos things are laggy*
Dwm.exe: releases 8GB+ of RAM
Mmhmm sure, Windows couldn't be improved upon

I found an interesting web search engine package this morning: https://about.marginalia-search.com/ I'm thinking I'll set up an instance, come up...

If someone seems to be being stubborn about something, perhaps ask them why (with genuine interest and desire to understand) and listen to them and believe them and don't try to change their mind (unless it's like life or death or an intervention is necessary)
There's probably a reason.
Alternative to meditation!:
1. Learn a new language. The more different it is from your native language, the better.
2. Speak it a lot. Get fluent, but don't learn much vocabulary.
3. Don't speak your native language much.
4. Voilà! After several months your mind will struggle to echo thoughts.

For anyone who claims this is a new problem under Trump — it's not, he's just made it easier to be open and brazen about it.

Recently my octa core 12 GB ram phone has been unbearably, unusably laggy.
This seems to be directly caused by the Proton Drive app, trying to do file encryption and backup in the background.
This is Yet Another Nail In The Coffin, stacking up against Proton overall, as a service and as a company.
