Struggle is a part of the human experience. Whether we realize it or not, each one of us has the agency to choose the good, the true, and the beautiful even when it is difficult. Our human weakness tempts us to avoid suffering at all costs and choose the false promises of selfishness. These choices ultimately hurt others and leave us unsatisfied. The season of Lent has traditionally been a training ground for Christians to learn to suffer for a higher cause as Jesus modeled when he went to the desert for 40 days, fasted, and was tempted. With prayer and a heart committed to love God and others, we receive the grace we need to overcome temptation and bring light into a dark and selfish world. The reward is real joy and a lasting internal peace that only Christ can deliver. image

It is a daily challenge to not be a jerk when life is annoying, upsetting, painful, or otherwise difficult. Each of us can choose the path of virtue as modeled by Jesus Christ. Lent is an opportunity to practice choosing the good, beautiful, and true even when we are hungry, thirsty, tired, or frustrated. As the Lord’s prayer says: “Lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil.” image

The common culture that unites Europe and America is grounded in the Christian faith. It is simply the case that reverence for the dignity of the individual, for human rights, for political freedom, and for equality comes, in the final analysis, from the Christian Gospel. Europe and America will truly flourish when each re-discovers its spiritual mooring. - adapted from comments by Bishop Robert Barron image

Jesus Christ is calling us out of the darkness into the light as He did with the Apostles Simon and Andrew. He said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” May we consider answering that call with a free “Yes” each and every day of our lives so that may be lamps that dispel the darkness by bring Christ, the light of the world, to all we encounter. May the truth set us free so that we may all be one in Him. Amen #christ #jesus #sunday image

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah Thus says the LORD: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. A bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching. I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness. The word of the Lord. #light #christ #savior #emmanuel image
