From a small auction in Stuttgart to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
Initially attributed to Luis de Morales's studio, the work was offered at Nagel Auktion in July 2021 with an estimate of €10,000. After a fierce bidding battle, it fetched €1,180,000 (including premium) to a prominent London dealer, who sold it to the Getty Museum earlier this year following extensive restoration work, which included removing 18th and 19th-century enlargements.

From £400 to £1.5 million in less than 15 months.
Sold for just £400 at Dreweatts in April last year as a work by a follower of JC Ibbetson, the picture was cleaned, and JMW Turner’s signature was discovered. It was sold last week at Sotheby’s for £1.5 million hammer price, amidst a bidding battle involving several museums.
