Last year I got to do one of the coolest things ever!
In 2016 I signed up at the South African Bone Marrow Registry and after 9 years, I got the call. Someone needed me.
But it complicated. I live in Kenya. The South African Bone Marrow Registry who called me are based in South Africa. The stem cells were required in Pennsylvania, USA.
After lots of testing to confirm my fitness to donate and that I would be an ideal donor to the recipient, my family and I flew down to Cape Town, South Africa and we did it.
The picture is me after the procedure, before the stem cells were transported halfway across the world.
I have never met the recipient. All I know is their gender (male), year of birth (1992), and that the stem cells were travelling to Penn. I was an anonymous donor.
Whoever you are, I hope that you made it and that you are thriving. If you ever get the chance, please pass it forward.
