Could one node alone be “the network”?
Yes.
Bitcoin consensus does not require many nodes to exist. Even one fully validating node following the rules is still running Bitcoin.
The network becomes decentralized when many independent nodes participate, but the protocol itself can technically survive with a single node and miner.
