🟠 Research Reveals 1,640 Companies Breached by North Korean Hackers Over 22 Months
New research has revealed a far broader North Korean cyber campaign than previously understood. Greek cybersecurity researcher Vangelis Stykas spent nearly 22 months inside infrastructure used by North Korean hackers and uncovered evidence that 1,640 organizations across 57 countries had been targeted or compromised.
Around 700–800 organizations suffered serious compromises, including root-level access to servers and cloud environments. Cryptocurrency companies were among the key targets because access to credentials, private keys, and blockchain infrastructure can potentially be used to steal digital assets.
Many of the attacks relied on fake software recruitment campaigns targeting developers. Victims were tricked into installing malicious software, giving attackers access to corporate systems. Several major organizations were reportedly affected or exposed through contractors.
For the Bitcoin ecosystem, the findings are another reminder that security is not only about the blockchain itself, but also about people, devices, and private keys. A single compromised computer or employee account can become a gateway to valuable digital assets.
